Do the pieds get more white patches as they get older or how they first feather is how they stay

Can I ask a supplement question to fletchers question

If I use a white peahen to a reasonable pied peacock will the white patches increase in size in other words get more white patches and bigger?

No not necessarily. The pied and the white genotypes are simply inherited in a yes/no fashion. Not inherited in a mixing fashion.

If the white hen happened to come from a genetic background that throws larger areas of white when the pied genotype is present, you could indeed get pied progeny with more white on them. There are a few of these lines around, they are an 'improved' type bred from the so-called reverse pieds.

However, if the white hen came from a background that throws smaller areas of white when the pied genotype is present, then you could end up with less white in any pied progeny. Probably most whites are of this type.

In any event there is likely to be some variability so you can select and keep the ones that please you.

Using a white peafowl for the purpose of increase pied pattern will not work unless you have good genetic detail of the fowl and even then you have a small % of success. genetically Pied and loud pied are the same they have one Pied and one White gene (at least this is the current belief but some have doubts) Using 4 lines of pied peafowl then cross breeding them into each line is the best way for success but by no means a guarantee and remember loud pieds do not breed true. The most sure way of getting larger white patches in your pieds is to breed from pied parents with larger patches! Even then there is variability in the progeny, you'll get anout 25% whites, 50% pieds and 25% 'blues'.

I put the 'blue' in inverted commas because what you get is dark pied, that is birds that look like blues but have the odd white wing feather.

Among the 50% pieds, you'll get birds with a fair bit of white on them and there will be some variability.

You'll need to keep your whits about you because there are at least two different naming systems about for pieds.

Thanks guys I think I get it now so to get the reverse pieds I need to keep using only the pieds with the biggest patches of white in both the peacocks and the peahens??
