Asking for help sexing a Peachick - Vic

Hi

We have two peachicks about 12 weeks old, they are wonderful and growing so fast.

When we bought them from the breeder she said she believes we have a pair from two different parents being: white male and blue female fine. Tonight we see the blue girl (maybe a boy) puffing its tail out and strutting its stuff in front of the white bird, who I must say was not all that impressed although we were.

So I now think we have a white girl and a blue with some white feathers boy.

Can we take a photo of them to sex them? or is it to early?

Any help would be great and may help us to be good foster parents for the beautiful birds.

Have a look at this thread. Apparently both the male and female display their tail when young so it may not be the best indicator of sex.

Its difficult to sex whites. However, blues are pretty easy to sex when young. The males will have some barring on their backs whereas the females will be plain.

I will take a few pictures of the back on the blue girl (maybe boy) and post them tonight. It would be nice to know what we have although I could not separate them as they are so content with each others company.

Its quite cold at night in the hills here (6c tonight), so we have the birds inside at night while they are so young, which helps in getting a good photo tonight and may help with them becoming use to us as they are so very relaxed and tame.

The links on APF have helped us think, we do have a blue female (as we were told by the breeder) due to the barring on her back and white male as he is bigger and with slightly different tail feathers.

I have attached a photo of them below.

They look lovely! But don't you have the sexes the wrong way around? I notice Andrewschooks said

Um yes I think the blue one would be a male, can't tell on the white one.

Hi Roova,

You are right, our blue would be a boy. We will have to wait with the white one but he/she is bigger heaver than the blue I assume that its a boy as well. Both birds were born the same time.

The problem is we do not want two boys, so when will the white one decide if its a boy or girl?

If they are two boys when can I separate one of them without causing distress to the other?

What ages do you think they are ?
