stopping mice

Does anyone have any ideas on stopping mice eating my peas food? I've lifted up the feed container to make it difficult for the mice to get in there. I thought about trying to make the cage making mice proof but that would be nearly impossible. Is poison on the outside of the cage advisable?

Any ideas will be appreciated.

Hard to stop mice but raising the food will help, baits is also a good idea but make sure its away from their pen

i'm not saying it may be easy (or even worth it) to retro-fit out an existing aviary to be mouseproof, but i do find it bizarre that so many aviculturalists scoff at the suggestion of building a mouse-proof aviary.

when i built my aviary i laid brick foundation and used mouseproof wire. now after a couple of months i had a few get in. but having the mouseproof wire meant that i could work out pretty quick where they were coming from. i filled a few gaps and haven't had one in there for well over a year. i've seen the mice in broad daylight, scurrying up the wire desperate to get in there but they can't.

its all in the build and the design mate. its totally doable if you can be bothered to be pedantic and not cut corners during construction, but if you didn't use mouseproof wire then its about as useful as a "no mice allowed" sign.

mice jump. birds spill food. lifting the food containers will help but far from eliminate the problem.

I would love to make it mouse proof but there is too many bushes in there and other obstacles so not possible. If I build a new one then I will take the time to mouse proof it as I agree with you it’s worth the effort. Thanks for the advice toothlessjaws

Yes a mouse proof pen would be idea and in hindsight I wish I had taken more time with construct. Next project will be vermin proof

Baits ,wired inside a milk bottle .

Hi

You can also wire the blocks of baits into a length of PVC pipe, this keeps the bait away from your birds and mice like to hide in the pipes and have a chew at the same time.

If you run the PVC pipes along the outside walls of the chookpen you'll find the mice will enter them more readily.

PS If Y'all wondering how we wire the baits ... They come supplied with a nice little hole through the centre of the bait designed for wire ,soft tie wire I find best,It is to stop the mice dragging them off , or even worse ,out into the open for chooks dogs kids etc .
PPS The Poly pipe sounds like the best idea I've heard . I use milk bottles for lots of things , Chookfood scoops , Fruit fly traps , Potting Up , Concealing baits , etc etc ,mainly because I like to recycle and they are easy to come by , But ..... I'll 'definately' do the poly thing as well now that I know

I did try the little plastic 'Catch and relocate' traps once [smilie=a_rolling.gif]

I did catch a few ,but in my situation it was , a bit of a joke ...
