Escaped peafowl

Hello,

I have bought 6 peafowl (2 boys and 4 girls) some time ago. I locked them up as advised in my greenhouse, but unfortunately 5 of them escaped. My place is only half an acre but my neighbours is 10 acres and this is were they are now. The big male that has been left behind is calling out loudly all day and sometimes I can hear the others calling back but they are not coming back. Can someone please tell me how I can catch them to get them all back together?

Hi Dorothee, Do you get on well with your neighbors? If so the following should work.

1) Firstly you will need to take the remaining Peacock and lock him in a smaller cage inside the greenhouse as far back from the door as possible.

2) Get a long piece of string (enough to reach the neighbors) and tie it to the door going around the door frame it closes on, with the remaining string stretched out in the direction of your neighbors property then open the door (of the greenhouse)and leave it open.

3) Place a large amount of grain & greens on the Ground, needs to be about 3 feet in diameter (very visual to the birds)

4) then with a few friends go over to the neighbors and WALK them back over to your place, keeping a good distance from the birds, do not rush them, slow and steady wins the race.

5) When they are back on your property you stay on the neighbors with string in hand and wait, when they go in PULL THE STRING!

Note: if you try to catch on your neighbor’s property you risk them going even further away, not to mention making them very nervous and wary of people.

yes, I do get along with my neighbours. Thank you so much for this advice. I will try and do exactly what you told me and hope for the best. Will let you know when I am successful.

Hi Dorothee. We had that trouble when we got some newies. The incumbents harassed all the new ones and they went so far away that they were too tired to come back, and it was getting dark. This was after months in a cage!!! We gently rounded up one we found lying exhausted in the bush and calmly walked him back, prob about 500m. The others , a few years later, we got a newie to replace one of ours that was lost, stolen or strayed while we were away. He was fine for the first few days, after we let him out, and we thought we were home and hosed. The third day he must have been harassed and he left. He was 500m downstream on the other side of our flooded river and it was evening and not many decent trees in sight. I just had to hope that he would find a place to roost and return the next am. He did thank goodness, and he has been pretty OK since. He had to defeat a male, Andrew, of his age, so then Andrew became a worry as he was bottom of the pecking order. He had been fronting another 2 year old male who was equal and they couldn't sort it out. They circled a tree incessantly, wrecking the tree, a dwarf peach, but we were so lucky that a local lady had lost one of hers to a fox and she bought him. Good luck with yours. Hi Dorothee. Just realised how small your place is. PA would prob know better but I think you will always have trouble keeping them in such a small acreage if you want them to be free. We have 20 acres and are surrounded by 100s. Ours sometimes wander on to the next place but in general I reckon they need at leats 50m radius from their centre. We found a poo at our front gate yesterday and that is 400m from our house. Don't want to be a spoilsport and I am hoping that your neighbours LOVE peacocks as much as we do. Cheers, Pam

hi Dorothee i would imagine catching peafowl would be hard we had turkeys that escaped and were every els other than our place also wen i get new bantams they fly out sometimes and once i had guieane pigs escape hours of "fun" :oops:
