Blue Pied Terms

Dysart, that would be good I think, but..... what about the split to white when you know there has never been a pied bred from a blue and a white but the progeny may have the white primaries???? I would happily go along with your measurement otherwise. Pam

Hey pam, splits can be white or pied so when you talk to someone about your splits you would say I have a split white or split pied. Same goes when you sell them as I have seen on farmstock a few times they say for sale - blue peacock split to white or for sale - blue peacock split to pied. The term pied and reverse pied is not new far from it actually its been used by the parrot world for ever and still is. I tested out the use of loud pied last night on friends that breed light sussex, I asked them if they hypothetically wanted to buy a peacock would they want a normal blue peacock or a loud pied peacock, my mates wife answered, defiantly not a loud one :lol:

test it out for your self and no hutchy most people don't search the internet first.

The thing is they breed differently!!!! Appearance, as in phenotype may be the same but the genotype is different. So I like to explain to each buyer who seriously wants to breed just what to expect. Personally I couldn't care what anyone calls them as most people down south don't even know whites and pieds exist until they see mine! We were asked to vote and so I did but explaining why I didn't think that system is perfect. But I think it is often easier to stick with the flow unless someone comes up with an amazingly good idea for change. All esoteric terms need to be explained to the uninitiated. Pam

Unfortunately in any area of knowledge there are always terms used that pertain to that area and perhaps are difficult to understand. Ideally there wouldn't be terms like this but I would think if we were standing in a circle of (eg) nuclear physicists discussing a project in their terms we would find it difficult to follow and understand all the terms. In everyday use this is what esoteric refers to, ie terms that are entrenched in usage particular to a subject.

SOme would argue that if we don't have specific terms for a subject then we are "McDonaldising" our language.

I would cite again "coloured" horses, as I used to know them, meaning "pinto" or "paint," as they are now called, I think. Then there were skewbalds and piebalds and I don't know if they use those terms now, but it gets better!!!! Since the introduction in Oz of the western breeds there is now Tobiano pattern, Overo, Tobero, Sabino, etc. To the uninitiated, these terms would have to be quite foreign I would think. And before some horse wizz takes me to task on these classifications I am not pretending to be an expert, just quoting a rough idea of "esoterica," not to be confused with erotica if you are Googling that! As this is well OT I suggest we get back to the thread!

Aussie peacocks are AUSSIE peacocks so we call them what WE want. By the results so far its a landslide NO to U.S terms

Just a little question... are the ones voting stakeholders ie do they breed and sell peacocks??? And what are the scores.... ie "landslide".... 4 to 2???? Free country and all that but I would have thought it would only be relevant to people selling, breeding etc. I suppose luckily it is a free country as I would go on using the terms which are relevant to the person I am discussing them with.

I think people can see the fact the U.S terms don't describe the birds, not even close.

Some examples are-
I have a 'loud' cocky
I have a 'loud' roo
I have a 'loud' Koala
I have a 'loud' Emu

I personally don't have peafowl but one day I would like too. Every country has their own terminology when it comes to animals and poultry and peafowl is no different. With Australians insolation the peafowl here would have to be different anyway as it is with many chicken breeds. One thing to remember is countries like America can get hold of new blood strains, we can't and haven't been able for a very long time. Also the average breeder doesn't trade peafowl with the USA or any country for that matter so what does it matter if we have our own terminology.

I voted no.
