Just a thought...

I've never seen peafowl shown....so are they and if so where???

Is there a standard for them?

If not being shown than perhaps a number of you peafowl people could get together and write a standard and start getting them out and being shown, just like us other poultry folk.

:)

Right on b&p there should be a standard although showing would be a little hard due to the fact that the males have trains and good Javans are quiet unsettled especially with something different or unknown. Ours are fine with us but strangers etc.. very skittish. It might be another idea to have a panel classify birds such as they do with horses. They could score the birds and receive some type of certificate and go into a breed register or stud book.
My thoughts on a good Javan (male) -
Tight crest with no ocelli feathers or splaying of crest.
Chest, neck etc should be a good copper green similar in colour to there rump and back with no blue tones.
Chest and neck should be well scaled (like fish scales) with no blurring or shading.
Wings should be dark black, blue and chocolate brown with no patterning at all.
Legs should be twice as long as a blue. Neck should be long and vertical when standing.
Facial patches should be bright distinct yellow and large. This is a start anyway.I have attached a photo of a comparison of some really good birds in QLD. Photos of good birds that were held in VIC can also be seen in the ABK Guide to Pheasants and waterfowl. It is good see there is great interest in peafowl and people are wanting to talk about them.
It is a shame Pam that you do not have any as even though they need to be penned they are so magnificent to watch.

We probably do have allot in common Drew as it seems we are both very dedicated to peafowl. I am sure if you want information it would only take an email and they would be happy to help you with Javan information for when you, or if you get some. They were very helpful when I approached them.

Oto, no problems mate. I am always happy to help and I hope you enjoyed the photos. Unfortunately I only own the bird in the first photograph I posted, the other photos are held by another person in QLD. I am with you Oto, it is much better to admire good quality birds as hybrids are sad to see really. I have attached a photo of an outstanding hen. She shows the typical copper green colouring through her front and lovely green shading throughout her feathering on her body. The scaling of the feathers was wonderful also to see in this hen. The long legs of the Javas are so like the Secretary bird, real hunter type birds. I have seen my birds trying to hunt lizards in there pen...... Unfortunately the Javas don't let them get far! This may even turn into a Java stud book if people keep posting stock which would be very helpful for all those dedicated to Javas. The old saying applies it takes the same cost to feed a good one as a bad one so you may as well spend a little more or wait for the right birds to come along.

Great reading ,I've really enjoyed sitting back with a smile and a cuppa...
I don't have much to add other than not every peafowl breeder is a member of a group , Club , organisation or Studbook .

Just one quick Question . .....is that a fact ????.... Only two breeders Got Birds from the Adelaide Line . Or is that just the only 2 you know of , in your club /studbook/circle/ Oh.... thanks for sharing that , Now I know Just the two [smilie=a_rolling.gif]

Well said bunyanuternie, I wondered if it was just drew and I that picked up on that and whats behind it. Wow the private messages are running hot. I have contacted peacocks australia to order a trio from them and they confirmed their birds originated from Adelaide zoo so that blows the only 2 out of the water.

I am enjoying this reading too, very funny in parts but very helpful too thanks drew.

I know for a fact that the first Java's that arrived in my area arrived long before I'd ever heard of the internet ;)
