Being a breeder of Light Plymouth and having pied and white peacocks, I have watched the forum for some time but feel the need to comment. If the demand is high and the birds are not available the price will go up. This is common in any market place. Tell me one person that has good quality Javans for sale right now? and breeding age at that!. I bet you can't! PA sells on his price list, Javans for $1000 and Javan reverse pieds for ???? I bet it is not below $1500.
Somebody else advertised great coloured pieds on another site starting from $500 upto $1000. I contacted this person and they have more orders than they can handle for this season. So albeit there is a high demand with no birds going to be available until the following season and the price is much higher than PA price list for pieds.
This at the end of the day means if you want them you will pay for the work and effort that has been put into these sort of birds.
So the fact that the prices are rising for Javans is a good thing as it means not only that these birds are sought after but that the birds will be preserved in Australia with more people interested in them. The fact that prices are going up means that this will in fact make them sought after by a greater number of people as you can make a profit of some description and that they are not costing you money to keep and maintain.
PA said they are working on Australian Charcoals... What are these birds going to cost when they are released?? I bet all there time and effort is not going to be for under $1000- a bird. Overseas these birds are not cheap so why would Australia be any different? PA if you listen to these knockers all peafowl should be worth around $50- so put me down for 10 Javans, 10 Reverse pieds and to the person with the off coloured blue peacocks (such a supportive description) put me down for 10 of those too. These statements are so negative , it is not funny. I wonder whether Drew needs glasses to say those other birds were just blue? It seems funny as the thread has had so many hits it is not funny. If these are common who else has them as I would like to buy some as well as Javan reverse pieds. The "off coloured blue" peafowl don't look all that different to charcoals or midnights so why would PA bother breeding there charcoals if as members are saying they are an off coloured bird? The person who brought the funny coloured ones had photographs and there seemed to be more than one bird involved. If it is in fact a new mutation or simply few of them around why would they not pay $5000 for the birds??
If they breed 10 young at $500- each which would be an acceptable number of offspring to expect and the dollar value is reasonable as they are paying this for whites and there are plenty of those held by people why would they not get there money back????? It appears that there are plenty of knockers around when isn't this a forum that should be encouraging people with Javans to breed them and encouraging PA to work on Javan Reverse pieds and Australian charcoals and encouraging the people with the other mutation.
Just my opinion.

Well said Hutchy!!! I am totally with you!! Who knows yet whether it is a mutation that can be locked in or a passing colour variation. And what may emerge if you keep on with that line?? Some people think white peas are boring, others love them. We also don't know whether the birds were bought by "that person" or at least I don't anyway. There are stacks and stacks of private collectors as you Hutchy now know and they have never been out there, eg that bloke you are referring to: he has just been quietly ambling along for all those years, selling by word of mouth to zoos and famous people.

People pay millions of dollars for paintings, mementos, etc and that is their right. We all know how hard it is to get youngstock to adulthood, especially the rarer stuff. We also know that when you sell your rare breeds of anything you are never getting compensated for your work. I have been to auctions where the price goes up a dollar at a time and I know the true value of the lot so if I want it I just bang in a true bid and usually get the lot. The seller is eternally grateful and you have established a good relationship. I have had honourable sellers point out the faults to me.

Cheers, Pam

Well said EJBobbie!!! I am totally with you!! What is the point of an opinion when after all it is only an opinion & remember opinions are like backsides we all have one ;) a_bravo.gif

Prices aren't responding to demand, greed is ;) you know 'buy big to sell big' I haven't changed my price on Lavender Pekins in 8 years and they are the best in the world, sorry I should have said the universe, sorry sorry what I mean to say is the galaxy (excluding unknown colonies on Uranus)  So Hutchy to prove we are far from nasty tell us a little about yourself, where are you from? Do you keep any other birds, like say cockatoos? Do you have any dogs?

P.s welcome to the friendliest forum in oz :-D I hope your second post is a more positive one :-D
Cheers Drew Smith

Opinions are great I think, Informed opinion is wonderful: uninformed, damaging and a waste of time. Because Oz has really no mutations to speak of other than white and pied and it doesn't look like we will ever be able to import them, it is imperative that people take up any colour variation that spontaneously occurs and run with it. Who knows where it will lead???

For example, PA, how did you breed that fabulous Reverse Java Green pied??? It would help all of us struggling to get more whites into our IB pieds to know how to go about it. It seems there is room in the market for everyone. I have helped quite a few people in Vic sell their youngstock this year, even though I have my own stock for sale, but if I can find someone closer to the buyer than I am I figure it is good for everybody including the birds, so it is not like it is competitive. Did you just keep looking at the whiter ones ie with higher percentage of white and selecting for that and where did the white come from in the first place???. Was it spontaneous??? It would be very joyful if we all helped each other I think. Cheers

Thanks admin, lets get back to talking about those shock prices. Is $9500 the highest paid for a java? I would think its the highest in the world? maybe some of the american members might know?

Drew I think erstwhile might be their last name or something? I don't understand it either.

getting well and truely back to the subect at hand

well I think I paid the best price EVER for a lovely bird a number of years back =
he walked straight into my yard and stayed with the birds I inherited - never found who owned him as no one replied to my ads
he was very tame and very social - he was a father in no time flat - my ladies just loved him!!

if I ever find the pics I took of him I'll post the best one in the gallery

[yep PA = I'm STILL looking for those pics  [smilie=a_whyme.gif] ]
