9 Buff Orps are out so far from beccaboo's eggs. 10 to go (fingers and eyes crossed). 23 out of 30 set were considered fertile as at day 7 candling, but by day 18, four had stopped developing.

I lost 15/70 in those couple of weeks (days 7-18) probably due to temp variations between shelves and excessive cooling during candling -- not just while they were out of the incubator, but while the door was being opened and closed and other eggs being candled.

I will NOT be incubating 100+ eggs in one setting again in the Kevatron. Unless...I don't bother candling at day 7 or 14 and leave them alone other than turning and then leaving to hatch.

In addition to 9 beccaboo Orps (10), there are 3 Barnies (6), 7 more Buff orps (2), 5 White Wyandottes (4), 2 Gold Laced Wyandottes (1), and 1 Australorp (4) so far. Numbers in brackets are the number left to hatch...if they hatch. ;)

2 more Barnies, 2 more Australorps, 1 more Barnie "hatching".

One Australorp has a broken leg. It's amazing he hatched at all. I fumbled with the egg yesterday afternoon and it pretty much smashed as it hit the floor. th_Noooo.gif I put it back in to continue hatching, which it did overnight. It came from a local mate's egg, so I willl give him the opportunity to keep it and treat it if he's got the time. Otherwise, I'll give it a very quick death. Further info: I noticed it has feathered legs.

The Barnie that is hatching has had a little bit of help. We screwed up a lot on Sunday with all the incubator opening and closing and some pipped eggs dried out. I made his "pip" a lot bigger.

At least two chicks pipped on the underside of their eggs and drowned.

A bunch of eggs are still unpipped and are probably DIS.

Correction: 11/70. Four Light Sussex never developed at all.

I also cracked open the Coronation Sussex that same day. It had stopped developing at about day 4.

THEN...

I finally cracked open the other 10 just now. Overall, most had NO development (I was wrong about them having developed), but were bad eggs. 4 had developed but stopped between 4 and 7 days.

I've just put the bad-legged Australorp out of his/her misery.

I have a Barnie that isn't doing well due to being helped out (though it would have died if I hadn't tried).

Nothing further to report. I've locked the incubator again and tomorrow morning I will take out any remaining chickens (none are likely) and unhatched eggs from that batch.

Then relock the incubator for at least two days.

The eggs from down south will probably begin pipping tomorrow or Thursday. I'll leave them alone.

8 so far. 3 x Cuckoo 2 x White 2 x [not written on eggs]

I've lost a few from the first batch due to injury/illness/lameness.
The 1 and only Australorp from Ian's was first to die.
I found two Buff Orpingtons dead in the brooder yesterday.
I found what I think are a GLW & Barnevelders this morning...alive but not for much longer.

The GLW has a bad leg.

The Barnie has a dried, scabby bum and stands awkwardly.

Last year I may have tried something, spent quite some time trying to "fix" these. Not any more.

I apologise to those who think killing them is cruel. While I do understand there are those who can "fix" these problems and I envy them, in my hands I think it is crueler to delay the inevitable.

Photo of chicks will appear in APF Photo Gallery when approved. I've held back a couple of adorable photos for the photo comp. It's still over a week before the comp opens. Patience. :)

We lost a White Wyandotte today. I built a non-predator-proof, non-chick-proof enclosure which worked fine until I went to pick the kids up the school. I got home and found feathers and a corpse. I think it was crows.

[If anyone starts lecturing me, I'll post a pic. I'm not talking about an uncovered, wide open pen. It was just not predator-proof or chick-proof is all. I reckon the chicken may have got out, started chirping loudly and invited trouble.]

So, Dumb Question of the day...
Do crows really kill chickens?

Yes

But...are Wyandottes supposed to have Rose-combs or can they have Single (serrated) combs? If single combs are out, it's not a major loss, but still very cruel and sad for the chick involved.

I stand corrected...by myself.

I only have two Buff Orpington pullets, but over a dozen cockerels...an extraordinary ratio (statistically). I had been saying that I'd lost no buff orps, so it's not as if I lost a couple of pullets.

Well, based on what I wrote back in August, it is possible.

Anyway...here's how a few of the 5mo buff cockerels look now in comparison to a couple of 2-3mo Leghorns, a 3mo Australorp, and a 5mo Blue Orpington pullet.

These are examples of the boys I'd advertised on Farmstock this past month for just $10 each with very little interest. It has been suggested to me that perhaps I set the price too low and potential buyers assumed that the price was representative of the quality.

What think ye? What is a sensible price? Should I increase the price to $40 each as suggested and keep them here if there are no buyers?
