WANTED 5/07 - Fertile eggs - Ipswich-Toowoomba-Gatton-Kingar

Random candling done on day 7 eggs. Below figures refer ONLY to the eggs candled (obviously, but wanted to make sure no misunderstandings)
Buff Orpington - ALL fertile from both breeders
Light Sussex - many candled, only ONE fertile (one of the last two candled)
Australorp (Hudson & Brown) - one fertile
Gold Laced Wyandotte - one from Northern breeder candled...infertile
Coronation Sussex - one out of two
Barnevelder - ALL fertile, yes, ALL...

Buff Sussex - two candled...infertile
White Wyandotte - ALL fertile (same breed that I threw two rotten eggs out last week)

There's a Plymouth Rock egg in there somewhere, but it wasn't one of the ones I pulled out. Shelves are now quite close together and I grabbed most from the front two rows. I also candled a batch of a dozen from the middle.

The White and the Mixed Colour Orpington eggs have only been in the incubator for a couple of days, so will be candled late this coming week.

I candled every egg in the incubator early this morning, including the Mixed Colour Orpington eggs from down south. At least 8 out of the 24 of the latter seemed to be fertile. Too early to tell for sure. All went back in of course.

Only the fertile or seemingly developing eggs (nearly 70) went back in of the breeds below...
0/3 Buff Sussex
1/5 Coronation Sussex
4/10 Light Sussex
3/27 Australorp (mate 1)
3/7 Gold Laced Wyandotte
34/46 Buff Orpington
9/10 Barnevelders
1/1 Plymouth Rock
3/3 Australorp (mate 2)
11/11 White Wyandotte

The only breed I wasn't sure of was the Light Sussex. The eggs that I "decided" were ok were dirty and that inhibited my ability to see clearly. The 6 LS eggs that candled as bad were all clean and easy to see into. I cracked three of those and each had watery yolk and white...just like the ones I threw away the day the eggs were going into the incubator.

Next update should be the day 7+ candling of the mixed colour Orpington eggs. After that, probably the hatching updates...unless a LS egg puts on a smelly show.

13/24 had development. That is a pretty good result.

With the discarding of another 11 eggs, I now have all eggs on two shelves (instead of four).

From now on, I will "pre-candle" all eggs before they go into the incubator. I have my reasons.

I also won't incubate quite so many at once. At least not without some serious modifications to the incubator that ensure VERY similar temps on all shelves.**

** Fertile and infertile eggs were found on every shelf, so the variations that I perceive as big don't seem to have been a serious issue, but I'd rather be sure. Time will tell if my concerns were justified.

23/30 from someone I Rebeccummend and 11/16 for the other breeder who I would recommend, but he doesn't want anyone to know how generous he is and spoil his bad boy reputation. :lol:

So, good fertility in the Buff Orpingtons, about 74%.

I candled all eggs early this morning before laying them all down on the shelf without the roller.

I was right to be unsure of the Light Sussex eggs. All four were duds.

In addition to the Light Sussex eggs which were infertile, left out as early deaths were...
2 White Wyandottes, 6 Buff Orpingtons, 1 Australorp, 1 Barnevelders, the only Plymouth Rock and the only Coronation Sussex.

I have NO Buff, Light or Coronation Sussex eggs in the incubator.

Next updates should be about hatching...

The unhatched White Wyandotte and Buff Orpington hatched before I even finished editing the photo. More chickens will hatch before morning.

Next update tomorrow. I'm going to bed early...I think...for once...maybe.

The competition is really hotting up. White Wyandottes and Buff Orpingtons are now 3:3, with only one representative for the GLW team. There's at least one Barnevelders well-pipped and on the way.

I dare not take a really good look as the lowering of temp and humidity is a real no-no
