Are white peacocks hard to keep

I want to get a pair of peacocks and I would refer to get white ones but I have heared they are hard to keep is this true? what makes them hard to keep?

Hi Gamebird. Best read the excellent article at the beginning of the APF index by Peacocks Australia on White Peacocks and white peachicks. I would get a white one and a pied one or a white one and a split pied or a blue from a pied or white Mum, but maybe not a pair in which they are both white. They are pretty hard to come by anyway and you can easily breed your own using pied or recessive to pied stock, a lot cheaper than buying the whites. It is best to start with the IB's anyway until you have a bit of experience otherwise you are throwing your dough away to a certain extent. Try looking at "Farmstock," "Allclassifieds" and "Trading Post" for ideas on prices and read everything you can lay your hands on. PA is and endless source of help. Personally when I have whites I don't even advertise them but "choose" people to offer them to. They have to convince me that they are properly set up and experienced.

I haven't found them to hard to keep but harder to breed than normal blue I do loose more chicks than the blues. The thing I found the hardest was actually buying then in the first place I tried for 2 years here in Townsville and ended up getting a pair from Rockhampton for $1200 they were more than I would have like to have payed but I am very happy I got them. I emailed PA and they helped a lot in the first year I had them I think I would have lost all my first chicks if it wasn't for them. Good luck with your whites Gamebird.

I actually don't have any trouble other than a few behavioural issues but I always advise people mainly because of what PA says as I feel they have had heaps more experience than I have had. It is also so easy to breed your own that I would never pay those kinds of prices. I had to swallow to ask people $120 for 4 month old whites last year!!! I gather in Qu they are heaps dearer. As I’ve only had mine a short time I can't give an experienced opinion but so far they seem no harder than pied but I am yet to breed them so that might be a different story. I printed off peacock’s aust information on white so I can use it as a quick reference.

This would explain the price of some, I answered an add on farmstock 18 months ago as there was no price in the add and was told $1500 for the pair. I didnt buy them.

I sold a 4 year old Peacock (male) from $350 which I thought was cheap but $700 is a bit rich

I was wondering why whites are so hard to raise in Australia. We have raise whites for years and they are just as hardy as the other colors we raise. We breed white to white and also to pied and raise alot of whites ever year. I wish they would bring the price here as they do in Australia we sell yearling for 100.00 pair.

Hi DMFarms, Welcome to A.P.F. This Article may assist you: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3035 we also breed a large number of Whites with little issues but in some states and some new breeders this is not the case.

Bobby Castlebury's is also in Texas, acknowledged by peafowl breeders throughout the country as the purest line of Java's from Rodney Michael line. Our next visit to the U.S will defiantly include a visit to the Castlebury's :-D
