Hi Rare Breed Lover, Welcome to A.P.F. Thank you for sharing your Photo. We can identify your Peacock but would like to see his Mantle (back) and clear left & right side shots showing his wings (not extended) try to take them side on if possible and in sunlight.

A guy who bought stock from me mentioned a "Pavo Gold" that he had seen when he was young. He said that it had gold colouring. I googled this and couldn't find anything. Is this the mysterious colouring that he was referring to??? Cheers, Pam

Hi Pam, not heard of that mythical mutation :-D

Many "Hues Variations" are not mutations at all. The info below should explain to all those interested as to "Hues Variations" and the way we see them.

Note: This applies to Indian Blue Peafowl

colors of the peacock plumage are due to an optical interference phenomenon (Bragg reflection) based on (nearly) periodic nanostructures found in the barbules (fiber-like components) of the feathers.Different colors correspond to different length scales of the periodic structures. For brown feathers, a mixture of red and blue is required: one color is created by the periodic structure, and the other is a created by a Fabry-Perot interference peak from reflections off the outermost and innermost boundaries of the periodic structure.Such interference-based structural color is especially important in producing the peacock's iridescent hues (which shimmer and change with viewing angle), since interference effects depend upon the angle of light, unlike chemical pigments.

I had 2 pied blues that had the same neck colour & the same colour train as yours, rare breeder lover. I think you will find it happens in blue pieds and is nothing too unusual & theirs a lot of them floating around

Is it undesirable to breed blue to green? from what I have seen they are quite ugly so I wondered why anyone would do it? As a collector hehe... of everything with feathers I can't see their value $$$ and thats what it all about with Cockatoos. But if they are valuable $$$ then I'll buy it.

Rare breed lover to me it looks like he has some java in him from the green tint in his neck. I know some think it not good to cross blue with greens we breed alot of greens to our color birds to get the percentage up. We raise over 50 different variety of peafowl and if it was not for crossing these birds you would not have a bird like PA java pied here in the US we call them pied spaldings

Hi Rare Breed Lover, it is a Hybrid and would be a 2nd or 3rd cross back (low percentage Green Peafowl) your second lot of Photos highlights the "Bragg reflection" when compared to the first, which we touched on in our post above. The white on his chest can appear in Hybrids of this nature.

Spalding = Black-Shoulder Indian Blue Mutation x Green Peafowl (we don't use the term "Spalding")
