Hi Guys

Is a pp40 dog crate big enough to tranport adult peafowl in ?

What do people use for peacocks with full tails they would be to long for a pp40 crate wouldn't it ?

Is it an option to cut their tail to transport them??? If I understand correctly they grow a new one every year?

Hi Squeak. We once had to take one of our boys to the vet with a full train and we had a really long cardboard box only about 40cm high which we meant to keep but Hubby forgot and used it for something else. I know Broken Bird has done it by making a long cylinder of reinforcing mesh and wrapping it in hessian. Excuse ignorance but I don't know how long a dog crate is but as they are dropping their trains now could you wait until they have done that??? BB uses the turkey crates too but they are higher rather than longer. You could always go to a hardware shop or an electrical shop and raid their recycled cardboard boxes. I think ours was an antenna box. I have to tell you a funny story relating to that. Someone who bought a mature male from me, but in August, so the train wasn't complete carried him home wrapped in weedmat with his head sticking out sitting on the guy's lap while his friend drove. He assured me he had done it before. It was a 200km trip. They sent a message saying they were going well except that the carrier "had a very smelly leg as the bird had done 7 poos on his leg." When they got home they rang again to say that the carrier had had a shower and come up smelling of rose and that the bird was fine. Not something I wpuld recommend but I thought you would like the mental pic. Cheers, Pam

Transporting & Freighting Peafowl within Australia

Transporting Locally: If your Buying or Selling Peafowl locally then we strongly recommend using a PP40 Pet Pack with 3inch foam glued to the roof, as this limits the head room and prevent direct contact with the roof. If this is not available then you can use a very sturdy cardboard box (Packing/Removal boxes are excellent) remember to heavily tap up BOTH ends using Packing tap and don’t forget ventilation hole (not in the bottom) and not holes big enough for them to put there heads out, remember the darker it is the calmer they will be. You must be aware of the outside temperature, and then add a few degrees inside the box so if it is a warm or sunny day please use your air conditioning and never leave them in the car for any extended period.

The don’ts for transporting locally:

Do not leave them in a hot car.

Do not transport them in a bag/sack.

Do not use a wire cage of any description, not even one covered.

Do not tie their legs together.

Do not overcrowd in the box.

Do not put water in the box.

Do not bang or tap the box.

Freighting Peafowl:

Peafowl can and are freighted thought Australia using commercial air freight, such as Qantas, Virgin Blue.



What are they Freighted in:
We use PP40 Pet Packs which are the only air freight approved. These are Plastic dog transport cages (pet tainers) these can be purchased from Vets, Produce stores, and some chain stores like “Big W” for approx $70.00 (medium) $130.00 (large) our customers can use ours with a deposit held until returned. Our PP20 & PP40 are modified with 3 inch foam glued to the roof. (this is not std)



Tips for Freighting:
If you are freighting Peafowl or any bird they must be at the airport 90 minutes prior to scheduled departure.

Do not put food or water in the box.

Do not put vegetation in the box.

Plastic dog transport cage (pet tainer) must have a zip tie on the door and cover the wire door with a chux or similar, this will help keep them calm & quite.



Summary:
Regardless weather you are transporting locally or Freighting interstate if the birds arrive in the afternoon DO NOT let them out into your pen or cage, leave them overnight and release them at FIRST light. When Transporting or freighting any birds you should ALWAYS treat them with the up most respect as you can only imagine what they are going through.

When I picked up my peacock I used two large cardboard boxes taped together, it worked well boy did it smell after I took him out so can't reuse it but it didn't cost anything so if I need to I will make another one.

Hi Tommy, Welcome to A.P.F. Cardboard boxes are ok for short distances but not air freight (not to mention the air line won't take them) or several hours road trip. If you invest in a PP40 it will last for many years and is easy to disinfect after each use.

I also used a cardboard box but by the time I got home the bottom was really wet won't be using one again. I think big w sell the plastic pet box?

Line the boxes with a garbag on the floor and lots of newspaper. Don't forget airholes! As we sell to people all over the state we often can't get our permanent crates back so we just keep a supply of good size boxes to put them in. One guy today wanted to ship his with socks over their heads and just loose!

i don't know why people don't just buy a PP40 crate to carry there peafowl in the peafowl cost more then the crate does. You can fti to adult birds in one crate and up to 4 young birds depending on how far you travel it's to easy.

Put sawdust in the bottom of it you won't have any smell or mess to clean up after the trip tip the sawdust out wash crate and you can use again and again.
