Thanks Pam and Whitepeacock. Having cruised this and a few other sites i had initially thought he/she was a boy because of the barring- its very obvious but I am probably confused about what Im looking for, as I said I have no knowledge of peacocks but am keen to learn, so I guess the jury is still out until I get another photo tomorrow. Will try to get a photo with a standard bucket or something to give you a better idea of size, but I think you are right Pam and its a very young bird. Arrived here a bit bedraggled and was very skinny but has fattened up over the last week with some food and TLC. I am building a modified geodesic dome for it this weekend. Will erect it over an existing tree as a perch, at least that is the plan! Will get some starter pellets/grower pellets on saturday as eveything is closed tomorrow and I dont even have chick starter at present! Thanks Pam I will phone you in the next few days, appreciate your help guys.

Hi Debbie. In my experience barring on back plus green showing all the way down the neck even at that young age, the lighter more "rufousy" look all point to boy, even the fact that he has wandered, but I am always happy to be proved wrong.... I always say you learn as much or more by being proved wrong!!! In a few weeks or with a better pic it will be easy. Cheers, P

Thanks Pam and thanks for the advice on feeding etc per phone, much appreciated. Am adding two pics to show size and colouring. We now think its probably a young male. Feel free to comment please. looks like it will need a friend, anyone in NW vic have any young peafowl?

PA thanks, and also thanks for this great site!! Feel like I am currently on a very fast learning curve but the little bloke now names Jack Flash is very forgiving of my novice attempts at peacock wrangling. Everyone has been very helpful so thank you all. Will keep everyone posted on his progress

Thanks for all your help everyone and Pam especially. Bit of an update. Jack Flash has now restricted his range to the enclosed garden mostly. I gave two point of lay sussex and and their brother to a friend on the weekend and that has changed the pecking order amongst the remaining 11. Norm the rooster is less agro and Jack Flash has been hanging out with all the chooks, not just the youngsters, sunbathing with them etc. He now comes to my feet for a feed - Ive been handfeeding twice a day to encourage him and sits on the table on the verandah staring through the window if im late. After several nights of trying to roost in the chook pen, and giving up cos Norm wont allow him that close to his women! he has finally abandoned the giant jacaranda next door and is tonight roosting in the umbrella tree next to the chook pen. So I think hes decided to stay and be part of the family.He has grown a bit and has certainly put on weight, cant fit through the mesh on the cyclone gate like last week. Might be my imagination but I think he has a lot more neck colour and some on his head that wasnt there before. Flashes blue at time too instead of just the green. Im glad we have a peacock!

Hi Deb, you aren't imagining all the changes. They come with the TLC you are giving him!!! That is what he should look like at that age. Cheers, P
