Hi Jase,
Sir Percival is my Indian Blue peacock and Lord Snowdon is my White Peacock. Both very regal boys!! Their names suit them beautifully. They each have 2 hens, Percy has Piper and Miss Plain and Snow has Princess Prunella (Prue) she is a white and also Miss Pied, no prizes for guessing her colours. They have just started mating this season and Prue has laid her first egg!! We should have lots more on the way, fingers crossed. Last year was a total failure as far as mating and sitting on eggs was concerned.
cheers
JanB

Hi Jan and everybody. We just had our first hatching. 3 out of 7. 2 were infertile, I think because she started laying VERY early and 2 had dead chicks. We had had a ripper thunderstorm during that last week so I am blaming that. All 3 are plain but one has wing stripes. Glas to hear yours are finally doing something Jan!! Cheers, P

I was overjoyed to see an egg from Prue (white hen) a couple of days ago and to see Miss Pied mating with Snow. This morning my joy is overshadowed by the condition of Prue. She has a nasty injury to the back of her neck and seems completely exhausted to the point of not standing. I know this would be from Snow being far too aggressive with her when mating. When I first noticed the neck injury earlier this morning it wasn't too bad but she was sitting down. Heard a funny sound a bit later and went to check on what it was and it was Snow jumping on her to mate while she was unable to get up or move away, the neck was looking much worse. Have moved her out of that enclosure into one where she is on her own and can recover (I hope). I will keep a really close watch on Snow and Miss Pied now, although Miss Pied is a bigger girl than Prue. I think Prue would be 2+ years now if not a little more, but she is certainly not as big as Miss Pied.
Prue has now started standing, drinking, eating, walking about and has laid another egg!! But there is no way I will put her back in with Snow this season. The wound on the back of her neck has dried over and will now, I hope, not become infected.
I remember reading in another forum topic about hens, not peahens, being too slightly built to handle the weight of the males and the male continuing to mate with her until she dies. I truly believe Prue was in real danger of being permanently injured or even dying the way Snow was so intent on mounting her while she was unable to move away from him.
I think she will recover ok, but it was scary for a little while.
Janb

Hi Janb, This is due to "Forced Mating" where the Peahen is not cycling and resists the Peacock. This can happen when there is more than one Peahen present and the other Peahen is cycling therefore to the Peacock he believes both are cycling. You have done the right thing by removing her; she would almost certainly be died otherwise.

Consensual Mating:
As the Peacock lunges at the Peahen after courtship display the Peahen will drop to the ground and lift her tail.

Forced Mating:
As the peacock lunges at the Peahen after courtship display the Peahen will flee, if this continues over a period of time the Peacock can become aggressive to the Peahen. The first usual signs of this are the Peacock constantly following the Peahen usually to the point of exhaustion, with his head turned in the opposite direction to the Hen. It's usually followed by the Peacock pecking the back of the head and lunging in an aggressive manner. This is an attempt to make the Hen yield to him but in most case ends with injuries or death to the Peahen.

Hope this helps

Thanks
