Hi Peter16, No don't paint it, it's better to use a Heat Lamp if possible as normal white lights can cause feather picking, but a normal glob will give off the heat required.

I use normal clear house bulbs 100w and they work great, have read about the picking thing but not happened to me :-D

Good idea having two bulbs never thought of that :idea:

Gday Peter,I use a Heat mat they use for reptiles they cost about $40s with a 65 watt globe above this way they are warmed from below as well,covered in about 1inch of sawdust,about sawdust if you go to a saw mill you can get trailer loads for your coops,then every 6 months rake out about 6inchs and spread it on you garden or lawns. It.s great I put about a1/2 bucket of builders lime per square meter into my runs this will kill any worms and bugs,keeps the smell down and wont hurt your chooks,a old butcher told me that they used sawdust in the shops to stop spills and that germs could'nt live in it in the 50's.Hope I've been a help.GRAHAME

Was just wondering are there any specific meats and or vegies that you SHOULD NOT feed chickens / chicks?

Hi Peter16, we would not recommend feeding any poultry any meat, as there digestive system is not designed for braking down meat. Most veg is fine (For Adults) just not onions. For chicks wait until they are a few weeks old then you can give them chopped greens to start.
