Hi, I find it hard to believe that there are a number of other breeders in SA and NSW that are breeding the fire backs in large numbers at all. I have contacted some of the most experienced keepers and breeders of fire backs in NSW and SA and I can tell you that there is no such thing as breeders breeding these birds in large numbers and this has been the case for years. I have recently spoken to Kim Olsen of the former Olsons Bird Gardens, who used to have 4-5 pairs about 9 years ago and he quoted that the best breeding pair would give him 20 young in a season. The others pairs wern't so successful. The only person in Australia breeding these birds and having any success to this day is the dutchman in Western Australia. He has told me that in 8 years, out of two pairs he has successfully reared about 45 young to adult stage and has lost a number as well due to hot weather etc.
The latest census on pheasants in SA conducted by the pheasant and water fowl society of Australia - Fire backs were included in this count - a total of 8 birds with no young being bred in 3 seasons and from what I have heard due to foxes recently, the current number is more like 5 birds. WA has a handful and most of these birds aren't old enough to breed and they all come from the Dutch-man same bloodline, which I have been informed by the people breeding these birds that there's no such thing as more than one line in Australia as there was only a handful originally imported in the first place. If anyone seems to be having such great results and success with these birds and I hope so, because i haven't found anyone yet. If we don't work together this bird will be lost from aviculture in Australia forever as the likelihood of an import of fresh blood is only wishfull thinking as the bureaucrats have created so many hoops to jump through.
Cheers jason

With numbers so low it will be all over unless someone has new blood, its as simple as that, look at the european sparrow, it has hit a genetic bottleneck after all these years.

Hi Yellabass, we have a number of breeding pairs of fire backs but like others who have them we have long waiting lists. Our orders stretch to 2011+ provided we have typical seasons. The main reason you don't see them advertised is because theirs not a lot of breeders out there with them and those that do like us have orders for years....... to come.

Good luck, hope you find one.

Thanks
P.A

Sorry yellabass but what part of pa's message did you not understand?

You said- The only person in Australia breeding these birds and having any success to this day is the dutchman in Western Australia-.

what a load of rubbish, you or the dutch bloke could not possibly know what I have or my mate down the road has or the other 21,784,189 has either, I may have the dodo bird for all you know. If you want birds from a person you have a funny way of going about it, you may want to listen to peaple like pa that actually do have them, good place to start yes.

It is the friendliest, without a doubt ;)

I agree Len too many make rash claims, know doubt to line their pocketts, you know 'oh it is so rare that I have to charge you 1000's' I have no doubt if peacocks says they are out there then they are.

Hey Drew if there are so many around how come I can
't buy a male. I know of only one guy in Se Qld with them that I have seen. A few people claim to have them but I am yet to see photos or live Birds. I would like to see the birds before I purchase. If you have contacts in Australia please pass them on. After all we are in it for the survival of the species. I am not being a smart -rse here I just want to aquire a male fireback with new bloodm line for my two hens.

I like the ones that are quick to bag other people out & stamp their feet but have nothing constructive to say.
The way I think is if somebody is so interested in finding a breed others could help out.
Maybe I have missed the point bigtime in this game tho.

Hi Yellabass,

I hope you find one mate, I spent a whole day looking at every classy from here to kingdom come for you and I have to say I found some for sale in the UK, like that would help you, but I still keep my eyes and ears peeled, so if I ever send you a PM check it asap cause it might contain info you need.
There are still a lot of people out there that don't have online access, but I think by word of mouth can be a powerful search engine in its own right.

So hang in there with your search, you may find one out there somewhere.

Take Care
Deb :-D
