Siamese fire back pheasants

Hi, I have a 3 year old fertile Siamese Fire Back hen in excellent condition, but it has been very difficult to find a cock bird. All my leads have ended up fruitless in Queensland. It appears the only people having any success with these birds are in Western Australia. Olsens Bird Gardens in Currumbin hinterland (when it was still operating) used to breed quite a few of these birds - where have all of these birds gone to.

If anyone out there is breeding these birds I would appreciate that they contact me.

Hi Yellabass, we have a number of breeding pairs of fire backs but like others who have them we have long waiting lists. Our orders stretch to 2011+ provided we have typical seasons. The main reason you don't see them advertised is because theirs not a lot of breeders out there with them and those that do like us have orders for years....... to come.

Thanks 'Peacocks Australia' and 'hchasers' for your replies to this subject. It would be nice to know if any of the keepers of fire backs in Queensland are having success with rearing chicks. And what is the success rate with fertility. I have read an article in the pheasant and water fowl society magazine of a breeder in South Australia who has a number of pairs and he hasn't had an egg off his mature pairs in three seasons. Are Queensland breeders having the same results, it would be interesting to know.

I CAN TELL YOU NOW THAT GUY DOWN SOUTH WOULDN'T BE THE ONLY ONE WITH BIRDS NOT LAYING OR CLEAR EGGS.

Hi yellabass, we have no more issues with Fire Backs than we do with Nepal's which is around 70% on average. A good diet including Greens & Fruit is important for Pheasants and Green Peafowl for that matter. Also Stress is a big factor, a planted aviary is VERY important for Fire backs, Nepal’s ect... We know and talk regularly with close friends in NSW & S.A who breed fire backs with around the same % We read similar about Java Green Peafowl but we run at 96% fertility so some breeders need to look at the diet and housing first.

Hi Hchasers, 36 = 73% for 07 we had 64% in 06 and 82% in 05 didn't look any further back but Martin (breeding Manager) shows an avergae of 70% average over 16 + years
