Darren - I think Kylie was replying to what I said in my post above yours regarding the carpet snake getting in from the roof/guttering.

Piddler on the roof. The foxes on stakes is similar to what dad used to do when we where kids. He would trap a crow in a rabbit trap & either tie it up or put it in a cage where he didn't want them to go & it would worn off the other crows, I don't think snakes would care. We got told a relocated snake had returned to its original destination from 20 km away, don't know it it was true.

Snakes are very territorial. They will try to return if not too far away' They will also fight a stray snake to defend its territory. I have never heard of peeing to deter. Glad its male urine. Imagine a woman squatting down every couple of metres or so?

LOL, nah just squat once into a bucket then pour it out :lol:

Oh i'm not sure if it's just male urine i was referring to 'man' as a species :-D

Hi everyone,great posting good laugh,but seriously, yes pee does work. My husband wont oblige me though and pee around my yard. To far from his shed to walk and he wont pee in a bucket either. He just laughs. He has on many occasion caught and bagged a snake for me though. I also have been doing it for a few years now. The only one's I wont catch are the browns and they wear my shovel.My grandfather told us years ago to pee around our pens as he always did and never saw a snake in his yards. He lived on the river at Coraki. He always had snakes in the hay shed though but never would pee there. I have had about 27 snakes this season and would have relocated about 20 of them. I never move the carpet snakes as I don't have a problem with them with chickens. Maybe an egg or 2 but not an issue as they keep the mice right down for me. I like black snake only for the fact they will eat other snakes smaller than them. I have dogs so I relocate them.Do you know someone who would catch the carpet snake or called a native animal organisation they will send someone to get it and take it away. my grandfather also spread ash from the fire around the outside of is pens and snakes will not cross ash because of the smell and feel. Also thick rope laid on the ground around the outside will stop them same reasons as the ash.
I don't bother as I am on the river and have an acre of ground to cover so I just keep my eyes peeled.With the amount I get around here I reckon that is what will get me 1 day. I carry my mobile in my pocket at all times because of them and have bandages stashed in many chook pens just in case.Sorry got of subject a bit. Nature is amazing though.

the thing with the pythons is if they can get their head in there then the rest of the body will follow. Believe me, they can get through a pretty small gap if they find it. Also they will push on wire to see if it gives way or if it makes a hole ie at a join. I relocated our 11ft scrub python about 6 weeks ago now and it has not been back. Mind you, would have something to do with relocating it at the top of the Cardwell Range on my way to Townsville :lol:

If it is possible, re-wire your cage or look at building another secure pen, Alcatraz comes to mind

The other thing is that they are smart and will learn a routine. If you let your birds out and put them away at the same time every day they will work out when they can get their dinner. They will also lay in wait for the birds if the birds have a favourite bathing/roosting etc area, they are ambush hunters and will take any opportunity to get an easy feed.

A friend of mine pretty well had to give up on having her flock of sussex and plymouth rocks as the scrubbies worked out what the routine was for their pen :shock:

I'm talking these snakes worked out that the birds were being put into the shed in the afternoon so they came around for afternoon tea :shock:

for something which is supposed to be a nocturnal hunter these buggers knew when was the best time to get a feed. And it made no difference going earlier as the snakes just kept coming earlier as well. Living in Kuranda did have its disadvantages. They've moved now so no more scrubby problems for them

You could always get a heap of Guineas and Peafowl , We got them for that exact reason , and have only had one carpety in our pens since we got them , Sadly He'd allready eaten 3 of our best sussex pullets , So he was Relocated a Looong way away , We live in the scrub and back on to the State Forest and used to have a big snake problem and I really think The Guineas and Peafowl work , Ian
