Hello Cackles, Welcome to the Forum, does the Goldcoast Council allow any Roosters? are you in or near the Hinterlands?

Thanks

Thanks for the welcome. I am on a residential block, just under 1/4 acre (994 sq m) so can have 6 head of adult poultry excluding roosters, and more with a permit but I've yet to investigate the guidelines for granting of the permit, other than annual fees. The animal management section of the council website gives the following:

Birds & poultry

To ensure that your birds or poultry are kept without nuisance to your neighbours you are required to comply with the following rules:

* keep your birds or poultry contained to an aviary or enclosure
* keep seed or any bird food in a sealed, vermin proof container
* aviaries and enclosures are to be thoroughly cleaned on a weekly basis

Restrictions apply to the number of birds that can be kept on a property, however more than these numbers may be allowed with a special Council permit.
Bird / poultry Landsize (metres²) Allowance
Budgerigars, canaries and other birds of a similar size Less than 300 Up to four birds
Budgerigars, canaries and other birds of a similar size More than 300 Up to 20 birds
Cockatoos, galahs and other birds of similar size Less than 4000 Up to one bird
Cockatoos, galahs and other birds of similar size More than 4000 No restrictions
Pigeons Less than 800 Nil
Pigeons More than 800 Up to 20 pigeons*
Roosters, peacocks, ostriches & emus Less than 4000 Nil
Roosters, peacocks, ostriches & emus More than 4000 No restrictions
Geese, ducks, chickens, turkeys & other poultry (except roosters) Less than 800 Nil
Geese, ducks, chickens, turkeys & other poultry (except roosters) 800 to 4000 Up to six poultry
Geese, ducks, chickens, turkeys & other poultry (except roosters) More than 4000 Up to 30 poultry

*Note: A member of the Pigeon Racing association may have more than 20 pigeons on landsize greater than 800 metres².

More information than you really wanted in a polite enquiry, I think!

welcome cackles, we have issues with our local ranger, he told us we could only have 1 rooster but when we checked with our local MP who we know quite well it wasn't true it pays to check up. your information is very good and in plain english too.

Welcome Cackles,
It seems ridiculous that you can have on 3999m2 one Cockatoo, but on 4001m2 there is no restriction, ie. you could have a million,or no Emu's on 3999m2 but a whole flock on 4001m2. :?: :?: :

There obviously could be an overcrowding problem with these scenarios, but you would have thought that common sense would determine a lot of these Local Govt. rulings-- ie. 0 -500m2, 501-- 1000m2, 1001---1500m2
etc etc. or something along those lines    I think the gaps to large.

Anyhow I'm sure you will enjoy your birds even though you have no Roosters to keep going the traits in your birds that you admire, maybe your suplier will do that for you.In the meantime you have the enjoyment of having home grown EGGS.

All the best,regards,
Snowball :-D :-D :-D
