Also I have to agree with PA in regard to quarentine, in fact if I can I quarantine 3 months or until they go through a full moult, depending on which comes first, as this should be sufficient and also the stress of a moult will bring on any symptoms if they are going to show. If it's a bird I am using to breed with then after this time I bring to other bird (the one I want paired with it) to it's pen and keep them both separate. If they breed happily and healthily then it's a good indication.

- jo-chicken = infertility is a totally different matter - and yes - if you buy a bird for breeding and it is proven that it can't supply the 'goods' then it is between the breeder and the purchaser to come to an agreement regards replacement.

I believe that if the purchaser does not use common sense when driving off with new birds - eg:- in crates in the back of an uncovered Ute - then the onus is on them as they did not take 'due care' to minimise the stress caused to the new birds.
However - certain diseases - 'Mareks' as an example - if there is a risk as you do not vaccinate [no I wont get on my soap box abt this] I believe you are duty bound to advise the purchasers that the birds are NOT protected other than any immunity they may or may not have acquired from the parent birds. If the purchasers still take the birds then I believe they have no comeback at all - as they HAVE purchased them with the full knowledge they MAY have this disease. [or any other as they have been advised the birds are not vaccinated] IF the breeder states they vaccinate and it is found later they lied = they are liable not only to replace the bird/s or refund the cost/s - but could leave themselves open to prosecution.

When I acquire new birds they are quarantined for 1-3 months depending on where they came from. Knowing other breeders and being able to trust them helps immeasurably. I NEVER go onto anyones property unless I have showered and changed at a friends house [I actually keep 'chook free' clothes there for that purpose. I then shower and change again before entering my own property. I feel this is the right thing to do and as it has been shown to help reduce cross infection I think everyone should do similar.
