That is all fine but if the breeder does not have anyone come onto the property and meets people to keep the location of the property secret and also to prevent disease than you cannot spend time looking at all the poultry, only what they have with them. You can spend hours with them and ask many questions in that time.

Yep i was thinking the same thing. I don't mind people coming onto my property to buy birds but i wouldn't want someone hanging around for hours inspecting all my birds and possibly spreading disease from their place to mine.
Most times i'll just take the buyer to my big selling pens and that's as far on the property as we'll go......unless of course i know the person or take a shining to them, then i'll happily take them around to see the other birds, but never touch them or go into the pen :)

I am with you Dean's poultry.

One has to be careful with the bio security of your own flock. So having people tramp in and out of all your birds boarders on irresponsible and guaranteed to spread disease.

Hi mummaroo, we were referring to a breeder that does, in the case of one that doesn't then you can only go on the birds offered but still ask the questions "Vaccinated" "Wormed" ect.... and go over the birds with a fine toothcomb. At the end of the day the biggest trigger for all diseases is Stress so an hour’s drive in the car can trigger visual symptoms. You can never be 100% and this is why "Quarantine matters" ALL new birds MUST be quarantined for at least 7 days but 14-30 is far better, we quarantine for 35 days without exception.

Thanks
P.A

Hi CL, Given the incubation period of some diseases even 35 days is really not long enough.

14 days is far better than straight in the pen that's for sure!

Thanks

Thanks for all your help. It is all very frustrating when you try to do the right thing by people but they just keep coming back and pointing the finger. Yes I vaccinate, and worm every three months and alternate the drenchs I use. It is now 3 weeks since these birds were purchased from me and I received another email last night saying another 1 had come down with the same symptoms as what 2 have died from.I give a 7 day money back guarrentee or replacement offer so I will be replacing 1 bird. I however don't think I will be replacing the other 2. The person finally took the last sick 1 to a vet yesterday. The email said it was some kind of a respitatory problem. It is now 3 weeks since the birds left my property. I don't have any sicks 1's here. I always cull out anything not up to weight or does not look right. Also all the 1's that are not up to type of that breed. This just seems to be going on and on. I have requested that if the bird does die to have an autopsy done and that may tell me something. I have made it clear though it is at there expense and not mine.
I am very glad this site is here to talk about these kinds of problems. Unlike some poultry sites this 1 does not point the finger, gossip and bitch about people and there poultry. It is just a bunch of people who want to help 1 another. It is just so nice. It is like having mates everywhere.Thankyou.
I do not have people come onto my property or even know where I am. I always meet people somewhere convenient to them and myself. I always make sure the birds are covered well and not exposed to elements of any form and that they are happy with food and water when I travel with any. I seem to be able to travel 6 or 16 hours with poultry bringing them home to my place without any problems to the poultry. I also can take them the same sort of distances without any problems happening with them. I have become friends with many of the people who have gotten birds from me. Not had any problems with loss or sickness there.

Why has this person waited 3 weeks to get the bird to the vet? I would have thought that would be one of the first things to do with a crook chook? :-?
I agree that after that type of time frame the cost of replacement is not your responsibility.

Hi Mummaroo, we agree with Darren, 3 weeks is too long for this person to keep coming back. Also they should have consulted a Vet long before this time and shown you a record of their Veterinary consultation. They must remember that had they purchased the birds from an Auction they would have NO comeback so the fact you offer 7 day money back is proof of your character.

Thanks
P.A

HI,

I think it depends on the problem, for instance if it is illness, what is the incubation period (infection to onset of symptoms)?, or if it's another matter. I had an experience recently where I bought a Pekin Cockeral for $90, who was infertile. I tried everything and 400 eggs through the incubator later I phoned the owner (3/4 months later) and informed him. He happily took him back and is due to replace him shortly. I believe when you pay that sort of money then it is reasonable to replace, given the expence and in-conveinience of what had happened as I lost money (many eggs wasted) and it is very little expence generally for him to replace (all comparable).
