Ok, well, i currently have two Gold Laced Wyandottes pullets (along with many other different breeds) and am hopefully getting another 4 pullets/POL and a cockerel this saturday.
I'm planning (and have started) on setting up a spreadsheet on excel to keep track of each bird.
I just got 25 numbered leg bands today for them so that should make life a bit easier when it comes to identification etc.
Just wondering what kind of things people would include when keeping record of their flocks.
So far i have such things as number, breed, colour, gender, age/month hatched. I was also thinking of adding something to do with if any got sick, or had to go the vet etc, as well as when they start hatching and laying eggs, fertility of eggs/whole clutch etc etc the list goes on for ever XD
Just wondering if anyone has any advice of the essentials i need to keeping a really thorough record.

I also include when they were wormed, when I bought them, dates of quarantine, dates put with the rest of flock.

It will be difficult to work out fertility of each hens eggs if you run all hen with the rooster at the same time. You may want to run 2 at a time for a while until you can work that out.

Hey Alice, put as much info down as you can imo. When and where you purchased the bird, what the parents were like-faults etc, overall appearance when purchased,any medications including parasite control. I pretty much write down as much info as i can think of, even if it doesn't seem relavent at the time

Thanks CL, they're some -really- fantastic ideas, running off to add them now hehehe.

With the fertility i guess i was leaning towards hatching rate, ie. how many hatch from a clutch... like the ratio i guess... don't know if it's really necisary but i guess good to keep in mind

Thanks also to you Darren ^_^ That's basically what i think i'll end up doing hahaha i always just write down -everything- and anything i can think of

I'm doing different sheets with different info so it'll be like a little excel filing cabinet :lol:

I'll have to take a screenshot of everything when i'm done hehehe :lol:

I keep records---have for a few years now---records include, date hatched(obtained) parents( some of mine actually have records back to great grandparents),either leg band or identifying feature----I also keep a record of any offspring from which matings, recorded as egs set/fertile/hatched, then viabilty is recorded too as hatched/died/sold/kept----the other thing I keep a record of is shows, placings etc---someone I know keeps productivity records too, he can tell you exactly how many eggs which hen laid last year :shock:

re health issues, all mine seem to get fowl pox when they are young(mostly due to my environment)other than that I very very rarely have heath issues, seldom medicate and usually don't keep birds with issues----hard line perhaps, but works for me :lol:

but were you keeping birds that had been to the vets, had medication , probably a good idea to record it,cheers pam
