Oops that should've read duck is using one now she'd be funny loking duck if she was a black garden pot!!!!! :oops:

Their easy to clean just got to remember to block each side or they roll when the girls get in them they don't like that at all :shock:

Nah. They were just hypothethicals. I hadn't even thought too much about them.

I average two (bantam) eggs a day right now. It would take me too long to collect 80 eggs.

Though, there is a dead bar fridge downstairs waiting for an incubator fit-out.

Depending on when the moulters stop moulting and the 10 week old become layers, I may have 12 active layers in several months (probably after Winter now), so 80 eggs might be doable...just...if I extend freshness to 10 days.

But, what would I do with 80 chicks? :shock:

As for Rex working overtime, he sure takes his job seriously.

And, I think he has a couple of favourites. The bantam with the gold neck feathers and one of the moulters. Each is going bald near her comb because of him. He holds on like it's a chook rodeo.

When he hopped aboard this afternoon while I was mowing about five metres away, I began to wonder if he was going for some kind of record.

I have Reject Shop Platic dog houses for my Orps & Brahmas - they prefer the size - and plastic = totally easy to hose clean.
Depending on the housing the smaller breeds either have a suspended nesting box in their cage or cut down 20L shampoo/conditioner bottles [hairdresser friend] - but the Phoenix just sit where ever they like! So far been unable to convince them the cut down bottles don't bite!
Old senile Mrs B [short for Bantam] sits herself in a small draw with the word 'ONION' painted on the front. Maybe in her senility she thinks she is an Ogre?

I use wooden boxes from the shop but they do smell after a few months. Can I paint them with a safe paint?

yes you can just use a lead free paint, most water based paints are safe to use.
