Yep agreed. All my australorp chicks come out black and white, but the white disappears after a few weeks

All my black chicks are black and white when born and I have ended up with straight black, black with gold colloar, black with silver collar, birchin, and the list goes on. You could end up with anything from your black and white chicks.

What breeds doesn't it work for I only ask as the 2 different breeds of chicks i have atm were wing sexed, they are purebreeds and have been confirmed from thier combs now also.

I see what you mean about black and white chicks pjh as some of my pekins were coloured like that and are now starting to become blacker as they feather up

Ok, new question...kind of. Same batch of chickens.

The largest of the four has feathers (well, they'll be feathers one day) down her legs just like Brownie (a large hen).

I can't be sure it came from one of Brownie's eggs. I have thrown the shells away and didn't take any notice. I "believe" the four all came from bantam eggs. The largest chick is about twice the size of the smallest (a runt if I ever saw one).

I don't think the bantams have feathered legs. I think Rex is Brownie's sister (or half-sister). If the big chick is not Brownie's and the feathering came from Rex, does that mean it's a girl?

The question is based on my very limited knowledge of sex-linking.

Even if sex is not determined by the feathering, I hope it's female.

I hope they're all female. They're going to be too small to eat.

Just my novice opinion , feathers down the legs is from the type of breed in the chick and really has nothing to do with sexing.

Bantam chicks are very tiny.

I asked because with certain breeds (maybe not these), putting an "x" coloured roo over a "y" coloured hen, produces "y" coloured cockerels and "x" coloured pullets (the opposite).

So, I wondered if putting an "x" breed roo over a "y" breed hen produces cockerels with "y" breed traits and pullets with "x" breed traits. (opposites)

If you're talking about sex linkage it comes down to the colour of the parents. It's the mating of 2 different breeds in order to recognize the sex of the progeny it's hatching. Such crosses involve:

1. 'Gold' and 'Silver parents which produce chicks whose sex can be recognized by down colour at hatching
2. 'Barred and 'unbarred' parents where the male chick has a white head spot and the female does not.
3. Parents that produce chickswith diffrent coloured shanks, generally the male being yellow and the female being slate or dark coloured.
4. Parents producing fast feathering (wing) females and slow feathering males.
Heres some examples:

1. RIR male x light sussex female- pullets are a warm buff shade and the cockerals are white or light shade of yellow
2. Brown leghorn male x light sussex female- pullets have light brown head and back with heavey chocolate stripes down it. The cockerals are black and white.
3. Buff leghorn male x light sussex female- pullets are buff coloured and cockerals are silverwhite.

These are examples of the gold and silver cross-

4.- Black leghorn male x barred rock female-pullets have pure black head and cockerals have a distinguishing white spot on top of head. Australorp and black langshan male can be used with the same results.
5. Barnevelda male x Columbian wyandottefemale produces similar results to the brown leghorn male and light sussex female cross.
6. Buff orp male x light sussex or similar silver female follows the 'gold' and 'silver' cross.

There are many other sexlinked crosses.

Autosexing on the other hand means mating of fowls of the same breed with the sex of the chicks being recognizable at hatching such as plymouth rock-the male has spot on head

So if i was to breed my GL wyandotte hen with the SL Ckle would that be enough to sex link them or is it more involved than that

Also would the hens be the same colour as mum and ckls the same as dad or vice versa

Hi Kylie, i'm not positive but i think they would have to be the other way around using the gold x silver theory.
