What breed and sex is this?

Well, it doesn't hurt to ask. :-)

Any ideas on breed?

His/her dad is Rex, the RIR X. Her/his mum is one of our black bantams.

Is the white on the breast and butt any indication of sex?

Think they might be a little young yet :-?

In about a week or maybe 2 when they are getting their wing feathers if you post another pic and take it so the wings can be seen easily it will probably be easier to say. :-D

If you have a look in the gallery Tahir has posted 2 photos wich show the difference between a male and females wing feather growth.

I'll try take a couple of photos of my pekins on the weekend and email them to you if you like :?:

When I took my four cockerels back to be swapped, the lady showed me the wing tips and I've been trying to remember which was which.

I could just pick up one of the pullets. :-?

I checked out Tahir's photos. Makes it real easy for those with fast-feathering breeds. Especially if someone has at least one of each sex at the same age to make the difference obvious.

The wing-sexing thing the lady I got my chickens off of told me about was to do with blunt vs pointy.

I think the pointy ones were male, and the blunt/curved ones were female.

This was in 8-10 week olds.

My wynadottes are maybe about 10 weeks now i think and the same age, they are still very easy to tell what sex they are by their wings alone, but you can see it from their comb growth and colour also. :-D

you guys realise the wing sexing thing only works for some breeds right?

and these are x breeds aren't they?

black chooks usually look like little penguins---the more white usually the better black they end up, the less white conversely usually end up a duller black-----affraid the white bits don't mean anything to me, sexing wise

chicken sexing is an art---and a good sexer with a high accuracy rate is paid extremely well :shock:

That explains it then. I never was good at art.

Regarding the white/black comments, thanks. The bantam hens are a rich black (one has gold around her neck), so the chicks will look like their mums, I guess.
