Perhaps DAFF has that power but due to logistics and cost have never tested backard chooks?

I think the big problem is people saying its here already but no one has proof of that

I have looked at their site a few times I could not find any mention of small scale flock testing

Apparently it use to be mandatory if you showed birds in S.A. but stoped in the 80"s
I have never heard of any being tested in W.A. till that bird flu outbreak here earlier this year.

So are they going to cull the birds?
Even though it's a tough issue, I think they should just make a decision. It's taking a bit too long

That is correct. 3 more have tested positive to this exotic disease and I have been told not all have been tested so that is that. They would have no choice as it would be demanded by DAFF as proof they were correct all along and I will see if those that attacked DAFF are grown up enough to now apologize, I bet not. I do hate being right but I do believe in karma.

I am waiting on the DAFF press release to read the facts as I believe 1 further returned positive would have been enough to carry out the destruction order and with 3 it was game over. I will post it when it comes up

Its a shame we were right all along on THIS forum I would have been happy to be wrong for once. I love the sudden shift elsewhere on the internet to "oh its best for biosecurity" when prior to the news its was attack, abuse, slander, bully the authorities who WERE RIGHT FROM THE START, any of the knockers want to step up and "say sorry"

I am always game to front a controversy, and especially when I see something not right. but I see no need to apologise. AQIS simply didn't give the information to justify their decision. They took too long to do it, and then left ARPIS too little time to respond, and a court decided in the favour of ARPIS to right this wrong. Such a decision based on one chicken, without full information, was never sound. The court allowed the proper screening to happen, something ARPIS wanted weeks ago and DAFF should have aggreed to. And FOWLMAN, I have NO chickens or financial involvement in any importation, just a heartfelt desire that many Australians feel, that everyone who has a go, should get a fair go. That wasn't happening in this case with DAFF.
The misinformation in this case has largely been from DAFF. They say that Pullorum does not exist in Australia, clearly it does in backyard flocks and they have no idea what strains. The term 'exotic' is ridiculous, just means overseas. They should give the strain. They say untreatable, yet elsewhere in the world, it is regarded as treatable. The same applies to comments from the Chicken Meats Council and so on.

I have said that if further testing showed that more birds were infected, then slaughter would be the only option, but that would also give ARPIS information that would allow them to trace just where in the system the breakdown had occurred. Had DAFF tested to strain level, which I doubt, it could get even more precise. That is how this science should work. I suspect that ARPIS have much more courage, resolve and commitment. They would not be able to do that had the courts not made their decision to allow the further testing. One unsupported test was never going to be enough to resolve this question.

Another item that I did find was that the US has a somewhat similar situation to ours. Commercial flocks are tested and kept free of pullorum by their biosecurity measures, but in at least some States poultry breeders wanting to enter birds in shows are required to subject them to a test for pullorum, the rapid agglutination test as I understand. I read on this forum that this was the case in some States here in the past as well.
