NOT pointing the finger at you 2_Drakes = just stating my opinion here and welcome others

I am fully aware that some parent stock 'sight unseen' in the UK by the parcel purchasers here in OZ have supplied the eggs, meaning they have been dependant on the ability of those in the UK to choose good breeding stock for these eggs that have hatched here

and yes there is a chance that some chicks that have arrived via the UK eggs will be 'lacking as to Type' < that is a given as chicks need to grow out well before they can be assessed and voted good bad or ugly = this 'lack of Type' is regularly seen at Sales and Auctions ALL around OZ in existing OZ breeds where many (not most but many) sell off their 'lacking' birds to those that either dont know or dont care

this reply is generic encompassing those that are knocking the imports without thinking the whole picture thru before stating an opinion that is either filled with bias (perhaps even jealousy) or only half informed

So many seem so quick to assume that all that have hatched in the quarantine will ‘need fixing’
Everyone needs to realise it is the genetic diversity that is important AND that breeding poultry is an ongoing job of careful selection AS the birds they have grow and mature

AND many chicks have been brought in as future outcrosses and some of those chicks are from friends they know in the UK – meaning they know the quality of not only the parent birds but going back a number of generations as well

I could, but wont, name 3 that I personally know that got parcels in specifically as future outcrosses

If you consider the WHOLE costs involved in importing, HUGE!! not to mention the time spend COUNTLESS days, weeks, months, years!!! then you should expect GOOD QUALITY and nothing less, why should we? these fowls should not be "fixer uppers" they should be TOP QUALITY no question if they were sourced from the "right breeders" in the UK?????????????????

Perhaps it all depends on what we consider to be "good quality". For me as a non show person it would be purebred genetically diverse birds with traits suitable to improve my current line of Spanish in the long term.
Others might want instant show winners or the opportunity to tap into a lucrative market.

We don't want to import "pet quality" that's not the idea and "good quality" in pure fowl is judged by standards and in this discussion "type" is in focus.

On the subject of "genetically diverse birds" and those bring them in for that sole purpose I say be careful what you wish for.

If we look again at the Budgerigar imports in the past and the "genetic diversity" then many would tell you they got more than they bargained for. Some imports bred 100% severe French moult offspring and Chrysanthemum offspring all of which are useless to the breeder so lets not be to quick to just want "genetically diverse birds" they must be sound genetically and not poor culls.

Agree that there would not be much point in importing pet quality birds and only meant to suggest that useful type might be found in specimens that did not conform perfectly in every respect to the current view of the standard.

Hmmm I reckon people that put their hands in their pockets fully appreciate what their getting into. At least they were prepared to give it a go. Since all you read about from those that didn't is either winging or "we'll wait till the imports come down in price in three years"

The people in the syndicate put their money in. No one forced them. They can be considered foolish, or adventurous or heroic. Its a little on the nose for those too, well, restraint, then to comment on what others did. I'm surprised admin of the import syndicate have not responded before now.
