So long as a bird meets what is in the current standard visually it can be said it is that breed/colour – there is no misrepresentation involved in an exhibition sense as the Judge judges what he sees on the day.

Anyone developing a new colour can sell offspring during the development process, they are entitled to state they are the colour they are working towards if the birds sold appear to be that colour – but morality says ‘tell the new owner the birds are part of a developmental program’ so the new owner is aware they may not breed true to colour.

A new colour/variety is first accepted by the relevant Breed Club and must be exhibited for a number of years by at least one exhibitor (remembering that not all Breeders exhibit) 3 or more exhibitors is preferred and helps promote this process faster of course.

But when you consider that it will be a minimum of 20yrs but more likely 30yrs before OZ sees the beginning of taking submissions for the Ed3 = most of the new colours that have emerged in the last 10-15yrs (that were omitted from Ed2) will have a proven exhibition and breeding record and the Breed Club as well as numerous owners/breeders will be putting in submissions to the APS Board for these colours to be considered for inclusion = NOTE that this does not mean they will be included = going on submissions for Ed2 we have to assume that few if any of the new colours will be accepted.

Regards the procedure leading up to the Ed2 submissions opening

From the day you purchase/acquire the birds you want to start the new colour with you have to keep records.

Every mating must be recorded every offspring recorded with notes as to number/sex and a colour description

Once the colour has been set = normally this takes abt 8-12 generations (all recorded) you then have to keep on recording while it is established if the colour breeds true = the new colour MUST breed true for a minimum of 4 (FOUR) generations before it can be submitted for inclusion

The Ed3 submissions will be different as so many ‘new’ colours will have been bred and exhibited for the bulk of the intermediary time and the colours will be well known in the OZ poultry World

As to breeds/colours that are imported (noting that some breeds/colours within those breeds already exist in OZ – example = the Chocolate Orpington) these imported breeds = some were included in advance in the Ed2, any and all that are imported in the first import that were not included will have to have submissions made – any subsequent imports will also have to make submissions.

Most have never thought on the subject of the Standard only having OZ bred breeds in it as that is not the way of the world or the future. There are many breeds in other countries that can and are being recreated here, there are many colours being developed within the breeds already established.
Most OZ breeders are always looking to the future and the future of poultry breeding is an ongoing one of development and inclusion.

Hope this helps in some way towards an answer

Would this be the same for any poultry breed? like turkeys for example?

Hi Jenni K and welcome to APF ^ I see this is your first post
Yes I imagine it would be the same for any new breed/colour/species as there is always a procedure to follow for everything
