Eggs and live birds can only be imported from approved countries and to my knowledge the U.S is not 1 of them

I think I will wait and see them in the feather then buy them for 1/3 the import price in a year or two if they are any good, like what happened with the budgies, buying blind is not my idea of smart.

Missed the first import but I am pleased to see buttercups have come in just what we needed desperately here. Looking forward to the next import if it goes ahead

A lot of people I talk to are against the imports. The reason for this is that we do not get to see the parent stock in the flesh so we don't know what quality we are bringing into the country.

Some that have imported personally know the breeder that supplied the birds in the UK = hence knowing exactly what they are getting going back generations

Others = agreed = they do not know

I am all for the imports and think that it is good that after so many years we finally get new blood for our existing breeds and some new breeds to.

I am all for it as well – new blood and new breeds – very exciting - but the wait and see approach is a wise one - lets see what quality these grow out to be and what quality they produce in their offspring

I hope that one day I will be able to participate in one of the syndicates as well.

Just don’t get conned – if you go for a part parcel with someone = make sure they can be trusted

Out of the the 64 syndicate members I doubt 3 or 4% would know the breeders or seen the parent stock in any capacity

I know 2 that have been to the UK and seen the flocks that their ‘eggs’ came from (and attended the National Shows while there) and have heard of others that personally know the Breeder that provided the birds and have known them for a number of years

Regardless – the chicks are here and we should not be detracting from the actual = that they ARE here and that alone gives genetic diversity in some breeds

‘good bad or ugly’ = the chicks are here and the ‘nay sayers’ ought to shut up and allow those that did get birds in to work with them (in peace) for the next few years to see what they produce.

At the end of the day it is 'impolite' to knock what they have had nothing to do with. Allow these people to have their birds, support these people in a positive way and perhaps it will come back tenfold on you for supporting instead of knocking
(not saying you are knocking Fowlman, as it is obvious you are not, that you are only stating the obvious in regards to what is being said around the traps)

Hi everyone

It will be a while before I can get involved in any imports but as I said earlier I encourage it 100%.

Fowlman do you know which countries we can import from? I was surprised when you said USA was not one.

gluck.gif to everyone in the current one. I hope everyone gets the result they deserve.

We ALL encourage the imports and want MANY more but we need to "make hay while the sun shines" as they say because the next import could be the last (refer budgie imports) so the point is we need to get the BEST possible quality stock and not pet cull castoffs (not suggesting any specific are) we just need to be on the ball and be sure of what we are getting ;)

The budgie imports keep getting mentioned. What happened with them?

Quote:
A routine review of the live bird importation program was initiated in 1992, and completed in 1993. The
review raised some concerns that the importation of live birds presented an unacceptable risk of
introduction of particular exotic diseases of parrots and related species (psittacine birds) and BRS was
commissioned to undertake a review of relevant literature in 1994.
In light of incomplete knowledge on certain diseases of psittacine birds, and with a lack of definitive
methods for testing imported birds for the presence of these diseases, AQIS suspended importation of live
psittacine birds in 1995. The decision was generally supported by veterinary respondents and the Bureau
of Resource Sciences.
Aviculture organisations have been actively pursuing a review of the import conditions, and a relaxation of
the ban on imports.
