Yep we have 2 Blue Peafowl without "spurs" as well. I recently received a private email from the USA stating that White Peafowl do not have "spurs" I replied to the email thanking him for his input and explaining that we have several white Peafowl that do have "spurs" I also confirmed they are Mature Peafowl aged from 3 to 6 years.

His reply was "Sorry since I sent the email I was told by a friend they DO have them.

Turns out he didn't have whites but has seen them!

Unusual email?

Thanks

So how old are they when they get their spurs? At the weekend we bought 5 new peafowl: a pied male with a fairly big train.....maybe 2 years old????, two hens of unknown age, a blue male maybe 18months old, as he looks the same as ours, and one which we THINK is an immature pied male. He has a black and white breast and a green/blue neck but the normal male back. Any ideas? One thing to watch for.... at the auction we realised that the owner of one was bidding against us, so it is always wise to check who the sellers are at an auction. The Club sorted it but it is hard to police obviously. It was knocked down to the bidder but when I checked there was no sale, so a very dodgy situation. So beware!! Cheers, Pam

Hi Pam,
From memory my whites were showing a small spur when they were about 18 months, however I can't quarantee that as it's just something that I've never really checked.

Glad to hear you got some great peacocks however sorry to hear of your auction problems.I must assume it was undertaken by a registered auctioneer and that the terms and conditions were read. Was it stated that the auctioneer and vendor reserved the right to ONE bid,if so then they were within their rights as long as they only had ONE bid, if you can prove other wise you would have been within your rights to ask for the lot(s) be put up again. :x

Auctions are very tricky in so much that at the fall of the hammer you have no come back on the vendor or auctioneer --- you are far better of buying from a known breeder, who in most instances will give you all the help they can or get to know the vendor at auctions before bidding.

Sorry I can't help you with your possible imature pied,I have not bred them, but I'm sure some other member will be able to assist.

Good luck with your new purchases, regards,

Snowball

Hi Pam, it is difficult to say what this bird is without seeing it? but from your description it sounds like a young normal Blue?

does it have any white on any part of its body (including wings) but excluding the breast area?

Young "colouring" Blues have black & white on the breast area and can appear to have blue/green neck as juveniles but this should be strong blue by the age of 18 months (except when they are wet, then it turns green)

Auctions can be a trap, I know a bloke who purchased a (young)Peacock & Peafowl trio from a NSW auction at a premium only to find out some time latter the Peacock & one Peafowl are cross Java!

"Not happy Jane"

Thanks

Thanks guys. I reckon you are spot on re the immature male. We are not worried if he is a plain, as we have two pied girls and that pied male. Yes Snowball, the dealer was blabbing on how he had the right to THREE bids, but the people running the auction totally denied this. Also he made heaps more than three bids, didn't have a reserve etc. We stopped bidding anyway, and I gave him a hard time later when I found out, and he gave us the bird for what we were prepared to pay for it anyway. I also made him pay the commission. I am really pleased with the bird. He is absolutely stunning. He has white tail feathers in the normal ones. The ABC has a thing about chook auctions tomorrow so I am going to email them about it. Keep up the good work. Great website. Thanks again PA. Have you any plans for your fabulous aviaries that you could put up for us newies?? Cheers, Pam

Yes we are about (next few months) to rebuild our pens at our other property in Brisane (west) We where going to use large hot house frames but have decided on good old coppers logs! we where also going to build several very large pens but have changed that too, we are now going with large runs as we can house more birds, but are yet to finalise the sizes?

Will post some photos during and after construction.

Thanks
