yes the text book is only theory, in practice not always the same outcome.

Try to tell some 'geneticists' that = the ones that read more than they breed and don’t have very much if any actual hands on years and years and years and years of experience behind them

If everyone just remembered that Mother Nature is the ultimate authority they would be much better off.

A dear friend (now departed this world) once told me, with deference to Mother Nature

Breed the best to the best and hope for the best,
Keep the best and cull the rest
Don’t feed what you don’t need.

And back on topic
The easiest way to test for Lavender is to breed Lav to Lav = 100% Lav if they are pure to the colour

The easiest way to test if you suspect the birds you have acquired are washed out Blues not Lavender is to breed them to Black as in that first cross the Blue is instantly much darker and very obviously Blue (aka you have been conned)

So once you know you have Lavender you breed them together
If, a few generations later, you want to up the depth of the Lavender as it has paled a bit – breed the best Lav to Black – 99% of the offspring will be Black (99% allowing for the M.N. influence as some have reported Lav hatching as well as the Black from this cross) = you grow every chick out to almost fully grown so you can choose the VERY BEST = you cannot assess for the best Type until they are almost fully grown then breed the best back to the Lav parents

Ok then thanks.I know that they have been shown, does that count for anything?Does that mean that they are pure?

it is no guarantee but as nearly all exhibiton breeders have good morals I believe you can be assured they are

looking forward to your updates once the breeding season starts

From your experience soozorps is it true that the blue has a dark quill where the lavender is the same colour right across the feather?

a good exhibition Blue has a dark quill, some pale out near to the skin - the feathers should exhibit a good dark Blue colour with darker lacing - not this washed out stuff you see getting pawned off all over the place (some at exhorbitant prices seeing they are just culls) < a bit of the 'grumpy old' in that answer but it is true - many sell off the washed out blues and some even claim they are exhibtion quality
if you acquire one or more of these washed out Blues - you have to get a GOOD Black as well to breed to them to start to bring the depth of colour back up in the next generation = you have 2 to 3 generations of work ahead of you to correct the colour

washed out Blues can be shown but they will be overlooked as the colour has to be dark

the Lavender Orpington has not had its colour definition/description decided on yet - the Club Colour Committee will decide on it then the information can be posted.
I will be submitting to the Comittee = being the developer of the Lavender and Lavender Cuckoo in OZ - it is then up to the entire Committee to nod or shake the provebial head

Is it true with Blue Orpingtons that the roosters can't naturally fertilise the hens???

the colour is irrelevant

Orpingtons need the fluff trimmed from their rear ends because the fluff stops the sperm from being able to be deposited in the female – chooks are external breeders = the boys do not impregnate the females by penetration

I trim my birds back quite hard = they look like they have hit a brick wall backwards at great speed when I am finished
A number of breeders trim back hard
But some don’t trim to that extent – some just do a trim around the vent area only
I prefer the more is less method

Do you ever pluck, rather than trim back hard?

Hi
Well I have got a beautiful Black Split roo
The lady that I bought him from bred Lav Pekins
So learnt my tips from her
Apparently if you breed Lav to Lav the feathers go wonky
