Hi Deb, it is used extensively in the United Sates & UK for Pied Peafowl but not so much here, we use the term "Reverse Pied" as it's more accurate and is also used for other bird species in Australia. Darren hit the mark as most people think you are referring to Noise.

hi pa.
those mottles look great. i have mottles in my bronze muscovys. when that are hatched thay start off white then the tail and head startes getting dark. next thay get a barred color or a cuckoo pattern then some turn to a mottled pattern . but i only know of 1 person working on the barred pattern most barred muscovys always turn to mottled .

do the chickens change color like that at all mate? sorry im not real flash on breeding colors like that as i always cull any that arnt self bronzes .

Hi Jase, yes they change quite a lot, when born they are all black on the back with yellow down on face, chest & under parts. Young Pullets can be almost totally black but the mottle markings increase over the first 2 years. Our line has good markings from 12 months.

Thanks for that explanation PA! I won't be marketing my reverse pied bantam peafowl as "loud" then! :lol:

I did wonder what "reverse pied" meant.

hi mate.
my color pattern i love the best is the self bronze , its the hardest color to get right , as most birds have white in the neck or bib and the white spreads thrue the ducklings. also the bronze is so rare as no one has done much with it where i am , most people who see my birds at shows didnt know there was such a color, i started out with 3 bronze girls 1 a barred ,1 a self, and 1 a pied, the barred girl has been breed 2 times and every time she has barred ducklings, my self girl has mostly barred but always has about 4 selfs . and the pied girl has all pieds, the barred birds seem to always have the barred pattern. but i now have 2 real nice self girls i breed last season thay are very nice , hopefully i will get some good self from them? but you can never tell with the mussies what color you will get . but i also done well the other day . a guy emailed me and he has a young self bronze drake for me

so i will be picking him up in the next week or so . but i cant help myself when i see any good bronzes as there so rare , the sad part at the moment i have more drakes than i do ducks :lol:

but i am shareing them with a friend of mine who has just started with bronzes, and also i am only just giving them to people who are trying to save this color , a lot of people only want mussies to sell to meat buyers :cry:

only just stumbled on this thread---I have mottled japanese ( amongst other colours) and have been told by a judge that a rooster I had was too "gay" the term is used in some japanese books I have also>

I have heard this term used several times in the context of too much white on mottled patterns( my son used to breed ancona bantams) and for this site to take offense at a widely accepted term, when used in it's correct context amazes me, by deleteing the word from the original post and then continuing the discussion you have made it into a much bigger deal than it would ever be---members had a problem with the term or the administrators?????????????

It's fantastic you are dedicated to Bronze, it's not easy to stabilize a new or rare colour, particularly when there is limited stock & breeders. You’re a Man on a mission :-D
