peahen with problems

Hi, we inherited two peacocks and two peahens with the property we purchased eighteen months ago. Apparently all around 10 years old. One of peahens has what appears to be a espiratory problem, her mouth is always open and she makes a bit rattling noise and has a swollen neck. Over the last week she has got less and less mobile and now can't make it to her roost, so I've isolated her in a pen. She is still eating. The other peafowl are in good condition.

We do have free range hens and roosters and guinea fowl all in good condition.

Diet consists of; Red hen free range and bran/pollard with whole meal bread and hot milk for breakfast. Greens - shredded lettuce, grated carrot, celery, corn, chopped garlic & chilli and whatever vegies we are growing. They have the same for supper. I also have high protein pellets and a source of cat biscuits for the peacocks. As they are free range, I've also ensured that they have plenty greens available. Not sure if I've got the diet right or wrong.

Very new to all of this and would appreciate some help. She is going downhill.

Rona, i am new to this and i am sure the boys here will help you soon better than i can,, but until they do i would be straight on to a heat lamp in her pen and some broad spectrum antibiotics....
Hope this helps till the guys here can answer you fully..

Your diet is not the best, ok first

Replace the Red hen free range with a whole grain mix you can buy or make it yourself from whole corn, wheat, oats, sunflower and shell grit.

Stop the ' bran/pollard with whole meal bread and hot milk for breakfast ' the breads ok but not the rest.

Stop the ' chopped garlic & chilli ' if want to give them garlic do it in the water not chilli.

Feed them ' high protein pellets ' only this time of year as they should be laying

Cat biscuits in moderation

Don't forget shell grit

If its a respiratory infection then it is possible she may have infected the others so when you treat her ALSO treat all the others that she has had contact with.

Thank you very much. I have just spoken to the vet and can get the Batryl antibiotic, however they are unsure of the dosage for the peacock. Has anyone any idea of the correct dosage and for how long they'll be needed?

I've taken on board the notes on the diet. They are fed with the hens and I've been making the bran/pollard mix up for them, mainly because of the -4 nights.

All advice is much appreciated.

For the best results the first treatment should be injection by your vet then orally twice a day for 7 days as per Bayer information
