old english game and langshan

Can I have old english game and langshan together in the same coop without fear of the cross breeding or is that unrealistic. I already have langshan but my wife wants old english and as room is limited my first thought is together? Are the old english just too small for the langshan to worry about trying to mate with?

Hi Metro,
If you are going to have both breeds will certainly need separate accomodations to avoid cross breeding.
The size differences will make no difference, where there is a will there is a way.
My dad as a young man had some OEG bantam hens running out and one set bringing out a clutch of chicks.On reaching adulthood it was obvious they were sired by an Australian Game male, the only fowl also running out.
Remember it only takes 1 successful attempt after 99 failures to get fertile eggs.
I have a friend who breeds Pit Game and the birds are all singularly housed so he knows the pedigree of every fowl on the place.
When a hen lays her first egg he puts in the cock for mating late in the day and removes him after he succeeds, he never goes back in.
The hen lays and sets on the resultant eggs and he only ever has a couple of infertile eggs in the clutch.
Looks like you are up for a new pen to foster the interest of your good lady.

Hi Metro,

Yes your Langshans and OEG will cross, nature is funny that way. The dominate male will father the majority of the chickens. The OEG are fairly agressive and I suspect the OEG will be the winner of any bout.

A potential positive is you will be able to tell the pure and cross chicks at hatching time. This is due to the difference in the breed traits.

As per Oaklands, I had a large Rhode Island Red cockerel, mate quiet happly with some very eager pekin pullets. The result of me setting 1 egg of said pekins, was a nice pullet that went on to be one of the best broodies I have ever had. Separate pens would be best.

or you could just build 2 or so breed pens with a rooster pen semi attached to each

= beingable to select matings

I have heard of an orpington mating with a japanese bantam hen :shock:

can you imagine that poor little hen after that
