How long is a piece of string.........

Depending on the weight of the egg that is incubated (under a broody or in an incubator), the breed of the chook etc...

I think there is too many variables for a definite answer to that question PP.

Chicka-Dee, I do realise that it depends on the breed of the chook.

This is actually an Agricultural Science research assignment that I am doing.

Is there like a periodic table somewhere on the weight and measurements?

I'm running my incubator now without any eggs in it, so I can put them in early if you want.

But you'll have to pray (big time) that they will incubate and hatch conf665

I read somewhere that a chick loses 10% of the actual weight of the egg prior to incubation when it hatches.

"Weight loss during incubation. The size of the air cell is a good and convenient guide to the correct levels of humidity, but weighing the eggs is better, but more troublesome. An egg must lose at least 11% of its initial weight in order to hatch. 15% is usually regarded as ideal, but some authourities recommend 16%. Eggs have been known to hatch when the weight loss has been 20%.

Part of this weight loss is evaporation. The rate of loss is not even throughout incubation, but follows a sigmoid curve; that is, the rate of loss is fairly rapid to start with, settles down to a plateau and then, towards the end, speeds up again. The remainder is metabolic loss which follows an exponential curve; that is, slowly at first, and then increasing towards the end.

It is the physical parameters that govern weight loss, and when the two curves are coupled, they may be regarded as a linear loss, with a tolerance of 3% either side."
