very crooked beak

I have a aust game/isa brown and she has an extremely crooked beak. It was only slight when I first got her at 10 weeks, now its almost comical. I have watched her try and peck food and it seems difficult for her. I know there isnt much I can for it, but would this maybe a reason why she hasnt started laying yet, she is approximately 24 weeks. I have another one the same breed that isnt laying either. Just thought she might not be getting enough food to be able to lay well, but she is big and looks well.

i dont think it should matter as long as she is getting some food

All my layers have gone off the lay at the moment, we haven't had eggs for about 3 weeks, mine are moulting (this doesn't help with egg production) which i've been told is more than likely from the weather patterns we are having at the moment. This is the first time i have had to buy eggs in 6 months :roll:

Like Stuart said as long as she is eating and drinking she should be ok. But then i could be wrong.

But i'm no eggspert :roll:

Aust game are really slow to start at the best of times, but the crooked beak is a real problem. Best thing to do is to ensure that the food container is full. If conditions are not perfect she will loose weight very quickly.

I've sort of being leaving this thread alone because basically, although it sounds harsh, i cull birds with such deformities at birth or as soon as i detect it.

Yer pretty much, what jo has said-just make sure it gets enough food, especially if she's in with other birds. She'll more than likely become the lowest member in the pack(flock)so she may have a hard time competing for food.

yes agree with darren, a bird with such a deformity would not be getting fed at my place either---------but they can survive if they get enough food, and they will always be low in the pecking order, so unless she is a pet would not be keeping her----cheers p

Well unless she starts laying soon, she might have to leave us. I will give her another couple of weeks. She hasnt lost weight and seems happy enough, so I will give her a little more of a chance. thanks.
