Well, we're at day 8 today and when I went down to see how Clara was going (because i was hiding from Clyde) this morning she had one egg kicked out sitting in front of her, which was stone cold :(

So now we're down to 11 eggs under Clara.

I candled the egg first but I couldn't see anything so I cracked it open and there was a small Zygote but noting else, so she's on the money and know her stuff my girl. :-D

I've decided I'm not going to candle the eggs as there are far too many & I don't want to disturb what she's got going on, so I'm just leaving Mother Nature to take its course.

Keep y'all fingers crossed for us wave.gif

Cheers

They are a really lovely breed Yas. So docile and patient and if you need a good broody I don't think you can go past a Speckled Sussex [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif] and fantastic mums.

When I give Clara cuddles, she just sits in my arms and looks around, and when she looks at me she gives me these weird looks as if to say "I like you".

She started laying eggs around about 6 months old.

What type of Sussex?

Do you have them on order?

Wonderful to know and thank you.
Clara is wonderful

Its Lord Francis who has me falling for Sussex's

Lord Francis is a Sussex cross but I have been told he will have to go since the new flock will be pure breds

I have 15 pullets and one cockerel light Sussex's on order from the lady who breeds them near by.
The Boy has already been named and his name is King Henry
they will be 10 weeks old when I pick them up around the 15 of Dec

PP gave me a idear so I have been looking up all the king henry's bot just the English ones and found a few others I like

Eleanor, Catherine, Elizabeth, Anne, Jane, Mary, Margaret, Florence , Bertha 2, Stephanie, Caroline, Phoebe 2, Josephine, Francesca, Victoria

Tell Clyde I hope that King Henry grows up to be a great rooster just like him,
it will be great to see his kids when they hatch.
How did you raise Clyde he is so wonderful

The breeder does not seem to use broody hens but the other way then brooder boxes.

When I had Berta the first she did go broody and she would get so cranky more madder still with the Isa's this is also the time she became Queen being the only one with a full beak she could grab a Isa easily, She would peck them hard when ever they walked past her nesting box, going to keep her name alive .

Hugs

Well we're at day 11 now and I just went down to see Clyde and Clara to see how they were both doing.

Clyde with his bum eye and Clara with her 11 eggs, only to find Clara has kicked out another egg :(

So sadly now we're down to 10 eggs.

I brought the stone cold little egg up to the house to candle it and saw that a little chick had started to form so then i quickly got onto the forum to see what stage of development the little one was up to before his ultimate demise and according to our trusty "sticky" by Soozorps he would have been somewhere between "beginning of hardening of beak & appearance of leg scales and claws".

As you can see in the pics there was definitely a beak that was looking like it was starting to harden and upon real close inspection (which I haven't put a photo of) is definitely some claws starting to form, so the sticky is right on the money.

Sorry if the photos are a bit gross but I find this absolutely fascinating.

cheers
Chicka-Dee
