All animals entering Australia are subject to rigorous health and quarantine checks under the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry’s strict import conditions.

The import protocols, which have been in place since 1998, require an absence of disease for the chickens to pass quarantine. Importers are made aware of the requirements when issued an import permit.

To further add I think the above quote from DAFF is most important of all. Even IF the strain of pullorum disease is in this country in domestic fowl and I stress IF as its not been confirmed or not to my knowledge the fact is the import protocols require an absence of disease for the chickens to pass quarantine regardless of if the disease is here or not. They are the facts like it or not.

THE commercial chicken industry has demanded that 4000 imported fancy chickens on death row at the Torrens Island Quarantine Station be slaughtered to safeguard Australian poultry.

Gee you quick poultrygroups I just got that email alert now

Quote:
Mr Fitzgibbon said it was a difficult situation and may be distressing to some but stressed the nation's biosecurity system was designed to protect animal and plant health, underpin the productivity of primary industries and protect the environment.

"The introduction of an exotic strain of salmonella could have serious consequences for Australia's bird and bird products industries that contribute $2.5 billion to the economy," he said. "That's without estimating the potential damage that could be caused to our native and domestic bird populations."

Australian Chicken Meat Federation spokeswoman Dr Vivien Kite called for the destruction order to be carried out.

"Salmonella pullorum poses a significant risk to Australia's commercial poultry flocks," she said. "The commercial chicken industry has invested heavily over the past 40 years to eradicate it from its flocks. The protocols in place which require the destruction of this infected flock were based on the best scientific evidence available.

"Both government and industry agree these measures are appropriate and necessary and cannot be changed on the run or on a case-by-case basis."

Dr Kite said failure to implement the destruction order would jeopardise the health of commercial poultry flocks, have devastating consequences for exports certified as salmonella-free, worth $45 million a year, and would undermine the industry's decades-long efforts to prevent rather than treat the disease.

Difficult call but Australian primary industry has always mostly been isolated and protected from diseases.

I read somewhere that there was a trust fund set up to help with legal costs to save these chooks.

Well at least the syndicate have been given a stay of execution until 25 July now, so keep your fingers crossed if you want them to live.

I'm still on the fence! conf665

So many lovely chookies all being put to sleep is just too sad for words, but a deadly strain of disease effecting all of our commercial industry, that would not be good either.

So much to consider. I'd hate to be that judge.

I wonder if the judge is a chook lover? :-D

Yes feel the same but leaning towards to keeping them. Some of the birds have tested negative for the disease
You know they keep on putting it off
That's (I think) a good sign(?)
