what types of chooks do you keep?

snowball I don't think common sense comes into it when dealing with councils. Your in a nice part of the world, we saw a show a few months ago (maybe longer) about Tropical Gardens and one was in Atherton Qld

Hi Jeff , I dont think the leghorns are any louder , than my other Roosters (6 at the moment ) he definatly isn't as loud as my R.I.R rooster I think the leghorns have a very noble crow, I don't mind the crowing it normally blends in with the currawongs and guinea fowls to make a nice background noise , I definately would rather wake up to a leghorn rooster than a train or an airport any day IAN :- ) ...

My smallest fowl are the loudest and crow the most, they are Modern Game bantams, I bought a new Pile colour at Goulburn and was told by the vender that he bought it for his grandson. But they live in Canberra and the rooster started to crow at 3:30 am, so was told to sell it.

I understand what he means, it crows all day, I do not care, I do not know if it crows at night as my house is 200 metres away from the chook yard.

And just as a note, I have already had someone complain about the roosters and the council wanting me to either get rid of all my roosters or place them in a sound proof room. I said no, first prove it is my roosters, second how big a block do I have to have to own roosters?

I own 7 1/2 arces and the closest house is 300 - 350 metres away. The roosters are also 15 metres from my boundary. I also live 1km from the Sydney to Melbourne railway and the Hume Highway and 2 km from a very large paper mill running 24/7.

Council still has not replied, that was 10 months ago.

Anyway, some roosters do not crow much at all, and some do, and this in the one type of fowl.

Hi Jeff,
Not sure what the programe was you saw on tropical gardens up here, but at the moment it would not look the same.We have been on our place since 1992 and this year was the first time we have had frosts.

Lots of ferns,heliconia's,bromiliades,birds of paradise etc frost bitten :cry:

But we still live in a beat part of Oz so we can't complain,regards,

It was north qld Gardens on the abc, featured Cairns & surrounding areas, so the wife says, it was hosted by that bloke from Gardening Australia. We have frost here all the time so we are used to it, we would love to grow Heliconias & Gingers but not a chance, very envious!. Do you have water issues or is that just Brisane?

I will show the wife your comments, might help sway her we have RIR and he is very loud, i like your last comment how true!

thankyou brokenbird, we saw some english game at the pet shop and he had a better set of lungs than my RIR, but he was very nice though. Is it just me or are chooks addictive, ever time i see one i want to buy the dam thing, rooster or hen.

No water issues,I'm on my own bore but a few years ago there was some water restrictions in town for a while but nothing like the unfortunate people in SE Queensland.

iam glad you don't have water issues, we don't have a big issue, for the most part here we have to much, rain that is. the water problems in brisbane are on the news here quite a bit, its a worry.
