I don't think chilli will work with dogs. I remember reading somewhere they could not taste it and it had no effect. My son's dog actually eats chillis so I don't know if it will work. Maybe a sound thing rather than taste thing

Hmmmm, I have used the chilli spray on dog jackets before to stop them ripping each other's jackets off and I'm sure I remember some adverse reaction to the sensation. Maybe the spray contains some ingredient other than chillis as I think it is designed for dogs as well as horses.

I'll double check it when I get home (I'm actually at work at the moment, but never too busy to answer a post!) and let you know what's in it.

I know that birds don't have the receptors for hot stuff, so it wouldn't work on them - would be so handy with cheeky birds that steal stuff and chew it to shreds!!!

You can buy a special one made for dogs, my friend uses it on his rotti, its in a container and you brush it on things. The dog hates it!!

I feel for you deeply, as today my 12 year old daughter text me at work , would it be ok for her to call me, instantly i knew something was wrong.
my worst nightmare came true , and im almost finished my 6th beer and a whole box of kleenex due to this phone call at 1pm/

my daughter who shares a large massive penned off area to keep our chickens and her guinea pigs from foxes and our own dogs, had not latched the pen properly( not knowingly) .
She then sat and watched a movie as kids do on the holidays, after the movie she came out side to find the two boxer dogs, the good one, the boy was sitting at the door , but the hunter as we call her was not there.

The girl boxer had got into the chickn pen with my silkies and pekins and killed them all bar mrs polka dot and mrs silkie and two recent babies of mrs polka dot , one boy and one girl. All the rest were killed , which were mr silkie, a beautiful buff silkie, and two pekin recent babies ,and another white silkie rooster and my favourite little fellow mr stimpy , the best most friendliest pekin who sits and has a little jabbber to me everyday,( loosing him was the worst) .

Obviously i went off at my daughter , as she knows my chickens mean the world to me. Im that angry with her for being so irresponsible( yeh i know shes only 12 , but geez her guinea pigs are in there too, so shes lucky the dog didnt eat all of them , so ive sent her to the grandparents for a bit whilst i recover and build their homes, and try and forgive her.

I cant really blame the dog, she has killed chickns in the past, but they have gotten out themselves over 6ft high fencing .
I guess it doesnt help to feed her raw chickn carcus from the butcher every night, but thats meant to be good for dogs teeth etc.

There are several ways to put dogs off eating chickns, but how do you train your kids to shut the bloody gate.

I am so sorry to hear of your huge loss! That must be devastating!

We lost a little chick we didn't really know, but I can imagine how you must feel having lost so many of your pets ( I feel I knew them too, through your lovely photos!).

Our pup has moved on to a chicken-free Sydney home - not because of the chick but because we didn't have the time to give him what he needed here. We are so careful now with the dogs we have left, but accidents can and do happen.

I hope you and your little girl can have a hug tomorrow, and that you can get back to enjoying the gorgeous birds that you still have.

I have a dozen pekin eggs here (hopefully all fertile) waiting for an incubator. If you have a way of incubating them I would be happy to send them your way to help rebuild your flock.

dont worry mate, mistakes happen. dont blame your daughter, in no time you will have flocks and you won't know where to keep them

All these dog attacks.
Makes me feel fortunate I can trust my cats around newly hatched chicks and pigeons.

My partners dogs are old and small (I still don't trust them with the poultry - they didn't grow up around chooks, only pigeons) and I was considering adopting a medium breed to deter local foxes. Starting to have second thoughts as a larger dog would be more of a handful if it considers chickens fast food!
