Dogs and chooks

Stray dogs took out about half our flock one morning at Jimboomba in 2000. :-(

My mini foxy mingles with the chickens most days when they are free ranging, its often the opposit way round here, the choox chase the dog when she gets to close to them :roll:

Hello CL good story topic. I have a Heeler x Kelpie, Jaspa.
When he was 3 months old he started to show an interest
in the chock's often stalking them and cornering them.
While gardening one day l could hear all this commotion going
on and as l turned around the only thing l could see was poor
Jaspa running towards me with the Rooster and 2 hens in chase :lol:

The Rooster a Wyandotte x RIR then jumped on his back and all
three beat him up still :lol:

Wish l had the video camera on me

I have 4 dogs, cattle cross, rotti x, Aussie terrior x and a shiutzu. They all run around with the chooks and never hurt them, when I recieved them as pups I would lock them up each night with the hens till they bonded. However the Rotti cross was 5 when we got her. She killed a chook and we tied it to her neck for a week. She hasn't touched them since even though she is of at night and the hens free range during the day. The neighbours jack russles however have killed 40 of my hens to date! Still awaiting replacements....

I would be so angry at the neighbours dog. I think I would be setting dog traps and carting them off to the pond unbeknown to the neighbour.

I have a trap up but they prefer the chase and kill then the free meat. Going for riffle licence next month!!

your neighbours will be in for a fright next time there dog goes on your property.

I trust my dogs
they have learnt by natural selection. Any that kill or chase without being told get "retired"
They will eat dead day-week old chicks I throw to them but they sit and wait if its still wiggling. ( nervres )
The cat gets chased by game bantams whom peck at her tail. They will follow her round the yard and have actually treed her more than once
Was suprised by the cover of Qld Country Life this week.

When I was a kid that was a capital offence. Similar to sheep dogs that chased rabbits during mustering .We ahd a sheep station
We used to have 40 odd sheep dogs but they all behaved
I know of a chook breeder now deceased who when asked, "have you seen my dog" only had 1 question for them, Does it chase chooks?
The owner would always deny it "Oh no my dog never does things like that",
His wheelie bin always had at least 1 dog in it a month.

I hope you mean that your neighbours are waiting for replacement jack russels.
