Yes all credit to any breeder who takes on rare breeds and keeps them true. The poultry community will benefit from these people now and in the future.

All are right, the breed is not ideally suited for the novice, the constant toe nails growing, beak growing, even the flakes on the legs can cause them annoyance if not trimmed, clipped and peeled off. High perches is defintely the preferred option. the most important thing is not to allow wet areas for obvious health issues, but also it adds to the destruction of their dragging tail feathers.

When I started collecting, and selectively breeding only in he last decade, many of the old wise heads did advise not to bother looking for them.

I would share some of this searching and finding but is not the time for it now. I would point out that there were only two colours of '"pure''. blue-red and black-red. Any other colour will have had to be a crossout so inspect your birds carefully to ensure you select for the desirous features of the breed. Once lost those genetics can only be got back in be breeding back to individuals that carry the traits. if your birds don't have them, no amount of breeding will get it.

Stay informed to be sure you get what you are paying for.

Yeah they are expensive and take a lot of time but it's good to preserve the rare breeds.

now that you have warned people about cross breeds you should at least show every body just a photo of what the real phoenix looks like and maybe even breed them up and offer to sell some for serious breeders like me. if not soon pure bred will be all gone and then people will again crossbred what they have and then there will be no such thing as a pure bred phoenix ever again :cry:

Females on show at Canberra. And there is a messageboard with pics of pure individuals. Look up Australian Phoenix or get to it through links provided in the Sicilian Buttercup Rescue messageboard

The Phoenix board now comes up on google as does Australian Yokohama

Gee, their tails are long. No wonder someone said they drag along the ground.

And, people with Silkies thought they had problems keeping their chooks' feathers clean. :-D

These pictures I took acouple of years ago. These are not of my own birds but mine are from the same parents as all of these. I only have a few pics of my birds in thee photobucket under Phoenix I think. th€se are of a line in Tasmania.

I may get some good photos done at Canberra of my females and the blue red roo in Spring.

WOW! the pictures were great and thats what i call pure bred. this line is really from Tasmania? i use to live there. you guys reckon there will be any of these line for sale in the future.
