more new chickens :P photos in gallery

Hi all

Well this is what happens when you go to swap a roo - you end up with more chickens! lol. I decided that I wasn't going to keep the silver pencilled/cuckoo whyandotte bantam only because of the seabrights I'm getting. He was going to be a handsome little fella too

but have to be ruthless.

The lady we got them off was happy to take him back because she actually had 3 girls left and by swapping him, she ended up with a lovely little trio.

So of course when we were there, we had a look at the other chicks that she had left. My husband decided that he wanted another large breed for eggs, so we got a RIR. He also liked the black and white colouration of the Anconas so we got one of them as well. The little pekin chicks that were there were so cute we just couldn't leave without a pair of them (fingers crossed they are lavenders, she thought they might be). Such little cuties

But we also ended up with a ring in ..... have no idea what it is and the lady didn't know either because the hatchery had mixed up her order and sent her a box of ?????? chicks. We don't think it's a bantam type and that's about it :lol:

It is a gorgeous blue/grey colour with some white on it's face. I'll get some pictures of the latest additions tomorrow when it's light. If anyone can shed some light as to what this one is, that would be fantastic! :-D

Ange, my wife always comes with me if I go anyware near chickens that are for sale, she doesn't trust me not to buy them

keeping chooks is defiantly an addiction, but a good one. Congratulations on your new ones, looking forward to seeing the pictures.

Ok so the RIR didn't get a photo shoot, she is looking pretty daggy at the moment with half half feathers, so I figured I wouldn't embarrass her

the light could have been a bit better, it was overcast this morning when I took the photos.
If anyone could shed some light on the grey one, that would be great. My husband recons that it is a rooster too :roll:

not again!! but this one will turn out to be just gorgeous I think and a good size too so I might be hard pressed to get rid of him :lol:

Hi Frasers_zoo, Great Photos, very hard to say what the "ring-in" is but assuming its "pure" could be Minorca? Can you find out what breeds the hatchery has? would be easier to narrow it down. One things for sure, it's a Cockerel. From the top view the RIR doesn't look to bad.

what makes you suggest Minorca? Hmm wonder how long I can be in denial of a roo?

no honey, its just going through a hormone boost! It's just the breed. People said they change as they get older .... ok it's a rooster

Obviously I'm not a chook expert lol so I am curious what people use to identify a mystery bird. Any tips would be appreciated.

Hi Frasers_zoo, we based it on Head shape, Body colour, Leg colour (although hard to see) but at that age it is very hard to know for certain. We like your rational denial, it could work!!!

So the best thing to do would be to post pictures when 's'he is older

the leg colour is a pale pinky colour, not yellow or black/grey. The other justification I can use for keeping him is if he turns out to be something which is really uncommon - honey this is a really unusual morph, people haven't seen one like this for years/ever, we could set him up as a stud! LMAO

Hi Ange, some nights it seems we could go by the motto "We never sleep" we rotate nights in the Office, so someone gets an early night.

If you post a Photo when he's (the very rare & exotic breed) a couple months older should be a lot easier, we hope :lol:
