a fair price for backyard chook eggs

I asked the same question for my duck eggs - so

what's a fair price for back yard chook eggs - - no chemicals in the feed, organic, well looked after

the eggs are 80-100gm size and come from light sussex and lohmans brown

I reckon 3bucks is pretty fair, if you need to purchase cartons, they will cost around the 40cent mark so would add an extra 50 cents on, and I do believe organic feed is a lot dearer so might be an idea to pop a bit more on for that to cover yourself, feed prices only really move in one direction.

The same question was asked and discussed in depth on another forum recently (I get bored sometimes when I've read everything on APF).

The price ranged from about $2.50 - $5.00 as I recall.

I have been selling mine for $2/doz because when asked "How much?" I don't have the ability to say $3 in case someone says "Ummm...ok...no thanks...I'll go and pay $2.80 at Woolies for some caged eggs".

I don't get out much and most people I associate with don't understand chooks. A couple of weeks ago someone asked how much I sell the chickens for and when I said $6, they went :shock:

The expressions were even better when I told people I sold 20-22 week old cockerels for $20...and not one buyer had hesitated at the price.

Admittedly, even I am still coming to terms with the fact that $20 is actually quite cheap considering the cost of raising chickens to that age.

I put more than $500 of food into 25 birds in those 20 weeks (an average of more than $20 per bird and a few died along the way increasing the average).

...but the price of birds is another topic. Sorry. :oops:

$3 is a good price, i sell mine for that with no complaints

Better than paying $5+ at Coles and that :roll:

I was planning on $3. Like anything, you are better off finding people who are willing to pay the price you want, rather than stoop down and sell your precious product for less than its worth. Setting up regular customers seems like the easiest way to sell eggs.

Once people start eating your eggs that are "really free range" they will be knocking your door down for eggs. I can not keep my friends supplied enough with eggs. I charge $4 per dozen and my firends have no problem paying that.

I will start a separate post re free range eggs etc as it is one of my pet peeves. :evil:

I don't have many to sell for eating but when I have $3 is what I charge, I think it's more than fare for a quality product if anyone baulks remind them of those poor things in cages & their crap life of egg production :evil:

Greenaus why don't you do a post on the price of raising a chook from the egg to 6 or 12 months, I think it would be very interesting
