what is the heaviest chook breed

Hi,

Just curious as to what the heaviest breed of chook is and also what is the largest breed of chook ..... in some animals heavier does not equate to biggest.... so let me know.

I was thinking that Orpingtons would be the biggest.

Cochin & Orpington are the heaviest at 6.35 Kgs

I think in this thread it was concluded that New Jersey Giants were the biggest or Opingtons.

after reading the previous thread I then went to www.ansi.okstate.edu/.../chickens/jerseygiant/ and saw some big birds.

This is hwat they had to say:

I was thinking of getting a few big birds for the "showyness" of it when I introduce freinds to the idea of having chooks. We have the basic bog standard cross breed layer you get from the produce store..... good layers but nothing to get excited about visually.

I was also thinking of getting some sussexx to grow and process for out meat consumption.

A friend of mine has just got a jersey giant roo, I'm waiting to see pics. I have some cockerels here from orpington x light sussex, they are 10 weeks old & as big as my smaller 4 mo blue orp chicks :shock:

In the American Standard they are given as 10 lb ,that's 4.55kgs,a long way short of Cochins & Orpingtons.
I would like to see the photos of the Jersey Giant referred to(including the sole of the foot), as officially there are none in Aust. All previous 'outings' have all turned out not to be Giants but small Black Orpingtons or large Australorps.

Do you thinks it is the height that makes them the biggest then? I'll have to have a look on the net now, I'm very curious

Like most of us I am cuious to see a picture as well.
I have heard jersey giants are in australia, more in the southern states & tassie, the birds are so large they dont go well with the heat & rumour has it in tassie they are kept in air conditioned sheds. :shock:

Bit of a luxury for some big chooks I think, cant imagine they would do too well here in QLD........
Haver read info on them in the states & thought it said the size was 6-8 kg.

And, like a few weeks ago, I've taken a look at various pictures. I stand by what I said back then...They seem very much like a fair size Orpington or Australorp. I haven't seen one yet that is a giant compared to either of those breeds.

...but I have no problem with being pointed in the direction of a jersey Giant that is bigger and I am not saying they aren;t bigger. I just haven't found any that are.

Interestingly the story we hear down in the south is that Jersey Giants are to be found in north Qld, Townsville to Cairns,and they are kept in air-conditioned sheds, very curious!
The Jersey Giant is a yellow skinned breed, sole of foot needs to be yellow, not white as in Orpingtons & Australorps.
Biggest,as in height, I guess would be a toss up,in Aust,between Malay & Aust Game.
