Is there such a thing as a "quiet" rooster?

Or not! Are there any breed reputed to be quiet? I'm interested in Silkies or Japanese bantams as I've only a backyard and I don't wish to annoy the neighbours and I want broody mothers who will hatch out some quail too!

yes silkies dont crow very much and if they do its not very load,and they make very good broodies but you will have to be carefull with quail eggs i would recomend pigeons for quail incubation

I find that silkies dont crow much and there crows arent very loud as well as belgian d'uccles. id still suggest u put them in a night box during the night just incase

quail eggs can be broken easily under a hen because of their size and weight, and the bigger chicken eggs can squash them. Pigeons are good because they aren't so big that they will squash the eggs and there eggs are around the same size

quail eggs do break easy and pigeons are smaller and make very good sitters you could fit about 3-4 quail eggs under a pigeon

Thanks for everyones help now all I need to do is find someone close to me with silkies or Perhaps the Belgians d'uccles I hadn't considered them more research to do......
It's the larger european quail I wanted to brood does the pigeon recommendation still stand?

yes pigeons are great i have hatched chicks under them you could try silkies but they may break them

I can tell u now that it will be quite a chalenge finding silkies, especially in rural areas away from major cities. but good lick and i hope u do find them soon. but just a word of advise dont just settle for the first birds u do find even if it was very hard to find u dont want to get ripped off

that silkies are quiet crowers is quite a misnomer. they are capable of crowing just as much as any other bird of their size, and are able to make quite alot of noise.

i wouldn't be chosing silkies on the basis of them having a quiet crow...........i don't think there really is such a thing. smaller birds like belgians, oeg, japs, sebrights etc have not such a large volume but can be very shrill.

i would be picking a breed on all round properties, not just their crow, as a crow will stand out in an area if its the only crow.

that being said i have silkies and love them, they are one of my favourite sorts of chooks, however, they give the other roosters a run for their money in terms of crowing volume.
