Hi jo-chicken - that sounds very interesting!

That lady was going to pay any amount of money for those lavender cuckoos - I was sitting next to her, and gave up pretty early on!

I bought a lavender pair at that auction, and now have some chicks split for lavender so am waiting for next season to try for some lavender cuckoos myself! The temperament of the lavender rooster (my avatar, Deccy) is amazing too - hopefully his sons will be the same.

I look forward to seeing pics of your babies! :-D

Hey I have a brilliant Idea!!! Want to borrow my beautiful buff hen (I was the one that bought the buff pair - the male unfortunately was completely infertile, so I have not real good chicks, just some multicoloured chicks by a pekin (far from perfect but cute) rooster i borrowed for a few weeks. What if I were to drop this hen off sometime and we work something out with the chicks??????????????? Then we could get some Buff Cuckoo's Apparently you cross the cuckoo with the buff then back to the cuckoo again. Would this be right? Interested?????? I don't care if they are out of season.

Hey jo-chicken - I would be happy to do that but don't have a mature cuckoo rooster yet! :(

In these colours I currently have:

1 buff hen (haven't seen her lay an egg yet, though, and she's definitely old enough :-? )
1 cuckoo hen (fertile)
1 baby cuckoo cockerel (3 months) split for lavender
1 baby buff cockerel (3-4 months) - straight buff bred

So, it will be a few months before my cuckoo boy is old enough to breed, and I'm not sure how the genetics would work for buff as he carries the lavender gene (ie. isn't straight cuckoo bred).... :?: :-? So I'm not sure I'd be your best option. Interested, but probably not much use at the moment - sorry!!

I know where there are plenty of straight cuckoo boys locally, but I think I have my rooster quota filled for now!

Yeah, roosters are definately a problem. I was putting mine in the garage in a dark box every night (the buff i bought at the Auction), just to discover that he was not fertile. 240 eggs through the incubator (yes I was persistent) and not one was fertile. I borrowed a rooster and took the other guy out and every egg after 3 days was fertile! But anyway that's life and the owner of the buff kindly took him back to replace him this year some time. Your right about the buff cockeral, he probably wouldn't be the best option.

Thanks anyway

Johanna

Any Lemon Cuckoo Pekins in Australia yet?

Maybeamac said the forums were slow (I think he meant he was bored).

So, I figured I get this thread going again,. That ought to be exciting for a day or two.

Ella has a beautifull new Cuckoo hen , We currently have him with our Black male as we don't have a Cuckoo Boy yet , maybe we could put him with the super virile Buff Boy , for a while to see what we get ??

Looking back at this thread I can now say that I no longer own any of those buff or cuckoo birds! I had high hopes for my cuckoo cockerel but he wasn't a good type, so he has gone to a pet home. Which leaves me with a buff pullet but I'm not sure if any of her eggs have produced chicks yet.

This might be a good project for the end of breeding season. It is such a beautiful colour! That means I'll need a cuckoo boy again though. Out of the potential 65 roosters I will breed this season none will be cuckoo. I might see if I can borrow one for a few weeks.......

I have a beautiful cuckoo boy and 2 very nice buff hens. My buff hens run with Meggzie. I never thought of putting the buff with hte cuckoo. I am trying to breed the lavender cuckoo at present. I need another pen then I could put the buff hens with the cuckoo rooster for awhile and hatch those eggs then he could go back with his black and cuckoo girls. Or maybe I could keep a lavnder cockerel and play swapsies between the pens. Dear just talking about it I am confused.

buff cuckoos look fairly interesting and if you have the stock to breed them you should have a go breeding them( which means more pens).

but make sure you post lots of pics of the lavender cuckoo when you get chicks.

It is really difficult to tell if any are cuckoo lavender at this point as the pale patch on the back of the head is not very obvious in the lavenders. I do hope so and I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will have the cuckoo pattern when the feathers come through.

I was contemplating in my vegie garden this afternoon and I think I can fit one more pekin pen in there between the other cuckoo pen I have just finished and the lemon tree. Not a lot of room left for vegies but at least we still have the fruit trees. :-?

The buff cuckoo and lemon cuckoo does sound lovely. I can;t get the photo with the link earlier in this post to come up with photos i just get some screen with other links.
