Interestingly research from Scandinavia, replicated in the USA, has shown that there is no ebc Buttercup allele. it is apparently eb Brown but the protein synthesizes in a different way to normal eb. This difference is hypothetically the reason for the oval pattern, a modification of autosomal barring.

Good evidence Rocky. It would be my call that there was no such breed as such in Sicily. Willow legs the results of mediteranean crosses yellow legged with slate or black legged. In my own experience, the buttercup comb is able to be replicated utilising duplex combed breeds. This last comment also why in the old books, SB's were accepted even if they had residual crest feathers at the back of the comb. another piece of evidence of the SB being a created fowl.

The ebc gene you are speaking about is another piece of evidence that indicates to me that the breed evolved, was picked up because of its unique comb. Without the comb, the variety would probably have been overlooked as just another backyard runabout.

As you can see by the example of photos, the down colour was fairly easy to replicate. It will be interesting to see what the adult plumage pattern will be.

Moving along nicely, three of the chicks have developed the La Fleche comb. A pure black, a brown coloured chick and a red-black. I'll get pics tomorrow. Each have reaqdaily seen combs now that they are a month old.
