Chooks not laying?

Hi all.
Reading this has prompted me to post this.

I pay $23/20kg of riverina red label layer mash, this was starting to get a tad expensive for the amount of birds I have.

The layer mash has molasses in it, also a few other goodies, it has proved to be great in the respect of producing eggs.
I changed to golden yolk layer pellets and the birds wouldnt even look at it, eventually they did have a try of it but egg count dropped badly, so I went back to red label mash & they went back to normal.

Now I have mix I do consisting of red label mash, golden yolk, and another mixed mash, this has proved to be great and the eggs are still rolling in. & food bill has dropped. :-D

Just a quick note as well, the molasses apparently aids in egg production, have been told this from heaps of poultry people and have seen the results for myself. :-D

Reading other peoples post & seeing how much they pay for grain hurts a little bit because the prices where I live seem to be insane compared to most other places

Just an update here, too, regarding chooks not laying.

For the first time in about three months we got two bantam eggs today. We also have an egg from one of the new layers, the black dumped chook and I expect at least one layer in the main pen to spit something out. We should get at least five eggs today, up from a maximum of four in the past week. Three weeks ago, we got one a day if we were lucky. Three weeks from now, we'll probably be up to a maximum of 8 or more per day.

When the Australorps and the older RIRs and LS begin, I'll have to downsize the flock, share eggs, or include eggs in every meal.

Ours started on layer mash recently. Barastoc and now Jenco. We also throw in cracked corn and a bit of layer pellets now and then, too.

For our chooks, the egg-drought is subsiding.

Chin up, Keith, your wait is probably nearly over, too.

I just had to jump into this post and very excitingly report I have now had my first eggs - first one was 2 days ago and another today. I am guessing it is from my Gold Laced Wyandotte as despite it being a first egg am guessing it was too big for either of my bantams. It was a proud proud day for me! My husband said he had not hear such excited squeals in a long time!! :lol:

I gave about 10 of my "layers" to a friend on Monday and Tuesday the pen of six Australorps gave me five eggs, up from 2-3 per day.

They know when they're needed.

I still got one from Big Rex's two girls. And, there were two from the four remaining layers.

Eight eggs today...better than the zero I was getting several weeks ago.

Oh..and since this thread was about foods...
The main pen get a mix of layer pellets and cracked corn.
The Australorps get a mix of broiler finisher and cracked corn.

From tomorrow the six Australorps moved to the main pen tonight with Soup will be getting layer pellets/cracked corn.

If enough people tell me it's fine to move Big Rex and his two into the same pen as Soup and his girls, I will. ...just until I am ready to begin incubating again.
