good for my mussies leading up to a show there legs look bright yellow, i would also say that to much might put a hen of laying ?

makes legs yellow, but if u have white birds would be careful, makes them yellow too, cheers p

Hi, I used to give my chooks corn in the winter months. I used to also give them millrun in the winter months as well. Millrun is a warmer and filler. I would put all the kitchen scraps in with warm water on a cold morning. They love it and so do the geese and ducks.

I got some barastoc Cracked Corn today. (Got other stuff as well...think it was $16.50 for 20kg).

I've re-read this thread to make sure my questions haven't been covered already.

I will probably mix it with other stuff, including perhaps with the Pullet Grower I also got today.

My main question is in regards to precautions.

A friend recently began giving her chooks maize and three of her Orpingtons got maize in their eyes and their eyes swelled up and got infected. Have you ever seen an Orpington roo with an eye socket the size of a big marble or maybe a golf ball? I saw it, it ain't pretty. It reminded me of those gold fish with the googly eyes.

What precautions can I take during feeding or mixing to ensure this type of thing doesn't happen?

She isn't on here...yet, so feel free to comment on what she may have done wrong if it makes you feel any better.

I didn't ask, but maybe they rushed in as she was pouring it into their dishes. I didn't see any mixed, just plain in the feed dishes. If so, perhaps I'll make sure I take their dishes out to fill them.

Hey charles , I have been feeding all of my birds maize in their diet for a loooong time , especially the new chicks , I give it to them seperate from their chickstarter and it is great for their poops

I really don't think it would cause eye infections , the only time any of my chooks ever got anything in their eye was one rooster that got a little piece of charcoal in it , once I got it out with some cottonwool and salty water he was happy as larry ,
I think it's more than likely your freinds eye swellings are caused by a blockage between the nostril and Eye ,or the ear and the eye , and is caused by a respitory disorder and is contagious , which would explain why all three had it , if it was caused by maize , the eye would reject it and be back to normal fairly quickly
I am fairly confident you can feed your fowl ,Maisemeal , or cornmeal with no complications , in fact I would encourage it especially with your young ones in this weather

Mums teach thier chicks to eat whole corn very early in life
If you study the chooks as they eat at a feeder, they flick though it picking out what they like. I often see them picking different seeds out depending on thier current needs. As long as its all gone after the meal, you havnt feed to much. Chooks are reasonably smart & will vary their diet as required
It does however make legs yellow and helps with the yolks to. The best for yellow yolks is fresh green pick and lots of it.
I have found when mixing feed,if i need to mix in dry mash, that will often get in the eye and can cause watering and swelling.
Eating slaters (the littlegrey cockroachy things) can give them eyeworm(they carry them) and these can cause swelling & blindness in the eye.
Old time cure was a drop of kero in the eye, but have had great sucess with a drop of Ivomectin in the eye.
There many causes of swollen eye/head
some will go down without damage, some blind the chook and some require total amputation

Thanks guys.

Upon opening the bag last Friday I discovered I got what the bag said...Cracked Corn.

I was expecting maize meal...something finer...maybe I was after crushed corn.

I thought cracked corn would only be suitable for the older chooks and not the chickens due to the size of the pieces.

However, the older chickens love it. I haven't fed it to the younger ones. They're under four weeks old so are on Chick Starter and green pick (brown pick actually) in their pen.

I just mix a bag of corn in with some layer pellets and wheat. Just mix them all up till they look even.
